..but Avatar was, wow, wow, wow, wooow, wow! The 3D was superfluous to the world that Cameron created very early in the movie. And, there are a right good deal of thought provoking barbs in the whole concept, never mind the tear-jerking planet-scapes.

The good news is that the flick is SO successful that we/the SiFi fans/ could expect a lot movies using this new technology along with a sequel of this one. BTW: What do you expect to see in the possible sequel? Regarding most of my friends it should be something like “Empire Strikes Back”. :-D

W/e, avatar was lame as a movie. There was nothing thought provoking or dramatic about it except maybe how in the world do one dimensional characters suddenly shift at the exact right time to support the plot? Visually, great, sure, but entertaining, thought provoking, come on. Alvin and the Chipmunks is more thought provoking.

Perhaps, but that's hardly a fair comparison. After all, they're two dimensional characters. :)

Went to see the movie for "Wow, pretty" and to spend some time with the GF. I left the movie with four messages, George Bush was evil: "Must fight terror with terror" anyone? The entire theater cracked up at that line. We shouldn't be in the middle east since all we want is oil. And that we shouldn't disrespect the earth, we should be more like the native americans and hippies. None of those are horrible messages (soapbox conversations aside) but repeatedly shoving them in my face isn't the best way to get me to agree with you. Cameron is a pretentious twit (message number four).

That made me laugh out loud, seriously.

So then, he'll be touring with U2 this year? :) Actually, although the band does strike me as more than a bit pretentious, I read a NY Times article this week written by Bono. His silly name aside (and don't get me started on "The Edge"), he was quite articulate.

that was spoken like someone who watched the news before seeing the film. I highly doubt you came out of the movie theatre thinking those four messages unless they were planted in your brain through some outside source beforehand. I didn't exactly care for the movie either but imo, all of the people who liken this to anything dealing with current events are pretentious twits. Cameron (and the rest of hollywood) is all about dollars. He/They doesn't give a rats ass about current events or what wars the US is involved in other than how to make the most money off of it. This was a simple story of "Good vs Evil". or "little kid vs street bully" or "nature vs technology". That is all. Anyone trying to read between the lines is simply trying to do exactly what Cameron was doing. Bringing in reader/viewership and increasing ratings (which translates to dollars).

Wouldn't happen to have been this one, would it? :-\ Somehow, I liked him better when he was busy steal Beatles songs from Charlie Manson...
Yep, that's the one. Regardless of whether or not he should be doing anything beyond the entertaining that got him famous to begin with, at least he's capable of presenting himself in a coherent manner. Trust me, among musicians that's a rare thing. :)

For me the most provoking was the actual avatar program, not the exploitation of natives, tree hugging, jibes at Bush and commercialism. It gelled nicely with my Brain in a Vat and Simulation Argument[^] fantasies, and it evoked several movie and reading experiences regarding the concept of 'driving' a body. The mythopoeic suggestion that "sky people", or "demons" (i.e. gods) are no more benign, or divine, than humans with technology also struck a chord.
