so, what do YOU do when you just can't get started

i did almost no meaningfull work today, a few meetings, some telephone help to some clients, but i can't seem to manage any code at all today. even the brisk walk, coffee break and lunch break can't seem to power up the grey cells, i find myself surfing the web and posting meaningless drivel on my favorite websites instead of doing anything. trying to decide if just calling it a day and coming to a fresh start tomorrow is in order.
I usually get ride of meetings, phone calls and so on. When I am ready with it, just pack my things and go home. Luckily my firm is quite permisive in relation to flexible work time, there are days that we need to do 12+ hours, but in "peace" times we are totally free to adapt out schedule or just change free time with acumulated hours. Today is the same for me, I am just waiting for the project manager to go to a customer and end-test the changed configurations. Productivity today... not much. I am reading documentation for another project whilst waiting for him, when I get bored just surfing a bit in web, smoking a cigarrete, getting coffee... I will discount a pair of hours from today's time and hope that tomorrow there is more activity.

I write documentation. Because nobody apart from me ever sees it, I can write it in technical terms, which often leads to me writing the code to conform to the specifications. For particularly difficult methods I also write pseudo-code, which I keep fleshing out until it's the final incarnation.

At my current job, I'm being constrained by the CEOs lack of desire in giving me access to the databases I need to see in order to even test my code. I have access to the database server, and I can see the databases, but I can't see the tables or stored procs associate with them. I found out yesterday that the 4-year old database has NEVER had maintenance run on it. The log files are over 300GB. The code I'm working on is VB. The network at work is so screwed up that I can't terminal service in or out (I can connect but the connection drops every 30 seconds or so). I got to work yesterday, and I my network connection didn't work because someone unplugged a bunch of cables in the server room. Until I got there, none of the code was in SourceSafe, but I'm adding it as I find/get it. I'm in hell.

VB.Net or the original monstrosity? If it's VB.Net, you could access the compiled program's source, switch off any obfuscation and recompile, then set up a script to: run Reflector, open the file, save the source back as C#, and recursively repeat on every non-Framework dependency.

Jystad, 2001not yet, try this on for size... the application has been written by a different firm 4 years ago in a combination of html, c# and vb.net. 1 year ago they cobbled in some WCF (again, written both in c# and vb.net). it was then passed on to my firm which foisted it on me. there's no documentation. all the code files are 10000-20000 lines long, no documentation, no meaningfull variable names, half of everything is defined as static, and some of it is tightly coupled to a closed DLL no one has the source code for. i'm not allowed to alter the basic flow of the program, nor am i allowed to rewrite some of the functionality. i'm not allowed to add new files (nd if i dare to say the word "partial class" the yelling is, well...) in addition, the project manager and costumer's response to all bug fixes, change requests etc, is "make it as fast and cheap as possible, we don't want the smart and stable solution, we want the cheapest dirtiest mess you can come up with in as short a time as possible". i am now trying to figure out a way to manipulate this clunky code to actually produce the results required by the costumer, after my PM shaved 50% of my estimated time based on the "it doesn't have to take that long" arguement... oh yeah, did i mention the Brains who made this dogpoo decided an XML file is a great idea for a database this, is, hell

Probably safer that way. Source safe isn't exactly reliable. When we used to use it, the database regularly had "problems" and have to run recovery scans on it.

I've never really had any problems with Sourcesafe other than it's less than intuitive interface. Database problems start to arise once the repository exceeds 8GB.

Jystad, 2001The guideline I've always followed was 5GB or 12 concurrent users, based on a suggestion from an MS guy in one of their forums. We currently have four VSS 'data bases', ranging from 14K (empty, waiting on the guy to move his code in) to 2.4G (a group of older products). I run the ANALYZE tool against them and back them up nightly. I've had to run the ANALYZE/repair option twice in the last four years. Like you, I've found SourceSafe to be far better than nothing, much less expensive and time consuming than the "Team Server" whatsis, and much more palatable to the inhouse IT yabbos than an open-source solution. Interestingly, I believe my success as SourceSafe administrator may be more of a guarantee of job security than my God-like coding skills, my rapier wit, or my stunning good looks.

For me Java+Eclipse is paradise. I don't know what problems are you having, but nothing matches the autocompletion and refactoring of eclipse.

I knowthe feeling, been through that as well, and coffee and energy drinks don't help. same with excersize. I found looking at the bank account and bills, or online shopping tends to be a decent motivator. if all else fails. "do what you can" even if it's not alot. make comments as your train of thought has left the station with out you. My issue is slightly the same but more on a "lack of motivation, with the exception of the motivation from home." good luck man.

The refactoring's good, granted, but gimme intellisense any day -- and give me menus, options, and tools that are in intuitive places, with names that tell me what they actually do! Everything is where some 14-year-old, somewhere prefers it to be! (In order of similarity to names of female pop stars, or some-such.)
