Hotels in Cancun
-
My wife and I are heading to Cancun in several months, I've narrowed down the selection of hotels, but am curious if anyone here has some recommendations (either for or against.) The only two requirements are that it must be adults only (not clothing optional; just no kids running around annoying us) and prefer that it be all inclusive. PS. For the record, most the hotels that we've looked at closely are in Playa Del Carmen and Puerto Morelos. PPS. So far, I've narrowed the choice down to the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso, Excellence Riviera Cancun and Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun. Any opinions of those three would be welcome.

Cancun itself is a tourist trap... If you drive down the coast an hour or so, there are a bunch of smaller "resort" type places where you really kick back on the beach. My family used to go down there every couple years for a week or so in the fall. Then again, if you're going for parties and night life, just ignore this post entirely :)

I think you will find that a kid friendly hotel in Cancun to be much better than an Adult friendly hotel ... remember Adult in Cancun is a college student which are very loud. Also, with respect to all-inclusive, that is another one I would avoid. Likely you will go to Tulum so you will have to buy your own meals there, I guarantee you will make a trip to Playa Del Carmen, maybe even Cozumel. Any of the trips you would be forced to pay for your own meals, kind of negating the all-inclusive ... plus tours can be had very cheap if you buy when there and shop around (Mexico is about shopping around) I highly suggest using the BUS, maybe even one day take the bus to the Grocery store to buy dinner. (Quite an experience especially at night because the places the buses go come alive with locals at night).

Tulum = Nice ruins, but it was better in the old days before they roped everything off. (Been there many times). If you want to see some neat Mayan ruins, there's another place a little further... Can't remember the name... Starts with a "C"... Gah, my memory is going... Playa Del Carmen = Giant flea market. Seriously, it's basically a flea market the size of a city, and half of the places have the same goods. (Been there a couple times) Cozumel = Heavily advertised tourist trap, but it might still be nice... Haven't been there personally. Few other things to check out, if you like snorkeling or diving... There are these sometimes-difficult-to-find spots called "senotes" (Think that's how you spell it)... These ponds/lakes/rivers that are sometimes over a hundred feet deep, right up to the shore... Like cave systems that got flooded or something... Can be really cool.

I won't be going to Tulum, Cozumel or Playa Del Carmen (unless the hotel is one of the places.)

Right now, I'm favoring Puerto Morelos. And no, not going for parties or night life. Both bore me. The purpose is sand and sea and getting away. I'd consider a cruise, but my wife gets motion sickness. (Never been that interested in cruises anyway; I prefer beaches.)

My recommendation (if you want quiet) is go to go to Cozumel instead. This is a great place for couples. Go to an all inclusive resort. There are ones with no kids at all. For me and my SO the cost was around for $1700 US each for our week vacation last November. This included everything (food, resort, airfare, tips, drinks ...) well everything on the resort. We spent around $120 each for a day trip to tour the island.

Agreed. Rivera Maya is very nice.

That is better. Also check out Rivera Maya. I recommend the Grand Palladium but there are kids there. If you go to Cozumel you can find lots of quiet resorts for couples. BYW, I recommend apple vacations. They have done well for us all three times we have used them.

Well, the place we used to stay is Hotel Akumal Caribe[^] (Hotel is the wrong word - It's really like a resort). You rent a villa (Like a small house), and there are some amazing beaches protected by a coral reef. There are kids, but there's enough space that you're not nose-to-nose with them like you might be in an urban hotel. Granted, I haven't been down there in years, and it was growing a little more touristy every time we went down (Back in the old days, it was like being on a deserted island), so it might be better or worse than I remember, depending on what you like... There's this great little outdoor cafe, the "Lol Ha", which is right on the beach... The food is decent, but it's all about the location.

Hi Joe, When i went we stayed at the Dolphinus because you can swim with the dolphins right there at the hotel. Its not free but its an amazing experience. It was all inclusive though and they had good food and a few restaurants to pick from. There are kids there but we hardly noticed them. The cool thing is its walking distance from the flea market and we got to do a lot of shopping. Its close to restaurants and of course, right on the water. You can also try this site http://www.allinclusiveoutlet.com/vacations/destinations/mexico/cancun/[^] Good luck and you really should go see the ruins. Its a day long bus trip but its so worth it to see the pyramids and learn all about the history. The bus has AC and a bathroom so its not a horrible ride. Best, Lisa

I highly recommend the day trip to Tulum to see the pyramids there. When we did that in 2007 they let us climb all the way to the top although I am told that they are not doing that anymore.

I would highly recommend Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun. My wife and I went in November 2008 and were very impressed (however, note that this was the first all inclusive resort we had ever stayed at, so perhaps my opinion is not as valuable as a more experienced traveler). It had just been built, so the road into the resort was a disaster, but once there everything was perfect. The food was awesome, entertainment was great, and what we especially loved was all the sports available (tennis, pool and beach volleyball, basketball, etc). There were no kids (little ones or college aged) when we stayed and most every one kept their clothes on (though I had one minor issue during pool volleyball).

Why Cancun? You'll be mostly among Americans tourists busy giving their people a bad name until 5 in the morning. Unless you are specifically looking for that ambiente, you might have a more interesting vacation when you avoid the US party towns. If you are planning to rent a car anyway, finding a cozy place on the coast should be easy. We stayed at Tulum, south of the ruins are good beaches and Cabanas where you can sling your (or a rented) hammock and a few very simple beachside restaurants. Low end of luxury, but marvelous nonetheless *. It might not be what you are looking for - there's really not much between beach and rather uninspiring yet overrun ruins. But hey, we were young, and didn't have the money anyway ;) And I'm not telling you how many years ago that was... *) Unless it rains for over two days. Yes, in the Caribean, that year, there were three days of rain. Guess when we were there.

I stayed at The Golden Parnasus It was really a good time. The activities were fun, the food was good and people were friendly. I played Tequila volleyball in the pool every day. Best vacation I ever had. Also, it is moderately priced and no kids allowed. Really a great time. However, the only beer is Dos Equis which was fine by me. They have name brand liquor at all the bars but you have to ask for it, otherwise they'll give you the cheap stuff. Tipping is not required but I probably spent $5-$10 per day just because I felt like hooking up the hard working Mexicans. Also, you can get a bus ride to the great parnasus and eat at all the restaurants at that hotel as well. It is not a five star place, don't get me wrong. But I'd give it between 3.5-4 stars. For the money it was awesome. I just LOVE stress free vacations like that. I went through Apple Vacations so everything was taken care of, but you could book it yourself and get a cab to the hotel no problem. I had such a great time, I wish I could go back. But my baby is due in a couple weeks so I won't be back there for a while.
I didn't get any requirements for the signature

I stayed at the Excellence in Punta Cana (Dominican) and it was very very nice, I would imagine the one in Cancun wouldn't be that different.
