Shameless Self Promotion -- or -- I Founded a Company
-
So, you might know that back in 2006 I started the ScrewTurn Wiki project. Well, three major versions has come past, and 60k downloads in the last 9 months. Everything totally exceeded my expectations. A couple of weeks ago I founded a company, and today we made the announcement that ScrewTurn Wiki has been acquired by such company. I'm very excited about this thing, and as many of us do, I had to post it here. :-D That is the reason why I have been quite absent lately. Setting up a company is such a complex and time-consuming task... anyway, we're done now, and the real work can start. Wish us luck!

Best wishes! :)

Wow! That should be a very exciting experience. Has this been a long time desire or you just made up your mind recently? Wish you good luck. :)

I planned the thing for a few months.

This is curiosity, not a criticism, but why start a company and "aquire" your own project? How does the company plan to make money (I note from your blog that the wiki will continue to be free). I'm not saying you don't deserve to make some money from what I'm sure is three year's hard work, just curious how you plan to do so with free software.

First of all congratulations. You've built something dam good, and I'm sure your company is going to be great. I've so far only played around with STW on dummy projects, but certainly have plans to use it for bigger ones in the future. Secondly. Good luck. Keep us updated on how it goes.

The very same question I was about to ask.

Holy crap, you are the guy who built that!? I have the desktop version installed on my work computer and I just updated my resume to say I spearheaded the effort to get a wiki (MediaWiki, actually... currently has more plug-ins than STW) adopted at my company. I can't imagine how great it would be to say I built ScrewTurn Wiki itself! While you are here, when is version 3.0 of the desktop edition coming out? Good luck with the new company!

Constructive criticism is always welcome. STW will only be a part of our business. We're working on two other (non-free) projects, totally unrelated to STW. Besides that, we also offer commercial redistribution licenses for STW. Basically, we use them to support development of the application.

The main problem is maintaining the installer. It takes an awful lot of time and, sorry to say that, there are not many users. I don't have an ETA, but don't expect it anytime soon. Besides, installing the regular version on IIS, even on XP Pro, is very easy.

I'm sure I won't regret doing so, even if we go out of business. It's a challenge that I really want to take. Besides that, I've been a freelancer for three years now, and I've been totally happy with such decision.

Hmm, I'll have to give that a try. My home computer is on XP Home, which doesn't have IIS, but should work on my work computer (XP Pro). Thanks for the tip!
