My laptop shocks me...
-
I was thinking the same thing. Being asked about a shock problem was a pretty significant tell. They have laptop "desks" that you can put them on when you use them, I would think they would stop this issue, that or getting a grounding strap might.
Once I got aware of this thing, I searched for solutions. I knows those products. But the thing is, this is one rare occasion when I am not in bed while using my computer. Even rare is that I have wet feet. So, I don't think I am gonna invest in it. BTW I am enjoying those shocks. They are mild ones (19 V).

...literally. It has a metallic border. And I have wet feet so it is shocking me like anything. Sometime back I went to a shop to ask for the cost of new models in market. They guy asked me, "Do you have any shock problem with current one?", and said "No.". But now I realize what he was referring to. It is strange that in over two years, I have never used my computer in a way that I would get the shock. He also told me that Sony has removed that metallic border from all the new models now. I saw one of them and it was looking great. I had to resist myself since I have to buy an Alienware which costs way higher that I had imagined. I hope too buy it soon though (provided I save some money*). :) *which is next to impossible for me.

I have this problem with my laptop occasionally (Dell Insperion 6400). After doing some research, I found out that it is caused by the power cord not being a proper grounded adapter. They replaced the power cord on this model after I bought it with a 3 prong (grounded) adapter instead of the 2 prong (non-grounded) adapter that mine has and that if I pushed thier support enough they would replace my power adapter for free. I never did because, like you, it isn't a big deal for me. My laptop has no metal on the case. It is the screws in the bottom that shock me while it is sitting on my lap or the metal around the plugs in the back when I pick it up.

It would surprise me if the laptop contained high enough voltages to cause a shock but the metal strip may be earthed and allow built up static to dissipate from you causing a shock. I had a similar problem when I bought a LianLi aluminium case for my home PC and realised it had more to do with wearing trainers indoors than discharge from the PC.
I am providing the earthing here and hence I am getting the shocks. Although they are very mild. I have experienced 220 V shock so I this nothing compared to that experience.

And is it any wonder that the monkey's confused? :-D

Mine is two prong hence I am bound to be shocked.

I have some really non-KSS thoughts on this. Sorry. :sigh:

Mine shocks me but for a different reason. The reason is its now winter and humidity is low and static is very easy to build up in the room I use the laptop very often. My temporary solution is to keep a spoon nearby so every time I sit down I can hold tightly on the spoon (pointing it close to a large metal object or the laptop itself) letting the metal do the discharging instead of my fingers..

After market power adapters aren't that expensive. Even if you're not bothered by the shocks without a proper ground if anything goes wrong in the power supply it won't have any way to safely shunt the power, and getting shocked by wall current is a different matter entirely.

Are you sure that the home/office electric wiring is still correctly grounded? Things can happen there: old wires get worn, breakers get weak & worn, critters crawl into the wrong tiny spaces & use their bodies to thwart us with current spikes n shorts n stuff. 1 example @ a resort camping club w/old wiring= too much rain soaked ground & the electric ground post that was driven into the groung....won't work in a rain soaked gulley that is basically a pool of water- folks were getting shocked turning on the showers even- just an idea...luck to ya, oh- I know...how about a wired operator & just run a cable & ground yerself- :omg:

Hi @danish, Sorry to hear about your shock problem, have you considered drying your feet ? best, Bill
