Although its not entirely to do with what you just posted, I went onto facebook and set Opera to ask me whether to accept cookies or not... it was constantly asking if it should accept cookies from facebook, and if you click refuse about 5 minutes later it then starts asking over and over again if I want cookies from facebook:suss:
I know you believe you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I meant.

The minute I created an account on facebook, all my address book contacts turned up there. I know they scan the address books and all that, but still it's very creepy sometimes. Your situation is even scarier. :~

I wouldn't go so far as putting LinkedIn in the same category as FaceBook. Although it is a social network, too, LI's purpose, way of functioning and target audience is totally different. I, for one, have a profile on LI, and have made a number of business contacts using it. Heck, there's even a link to my LI profile on my CV. Meanwhile, not a single friend request has been sent to me by a girl that is inspired by my eyes (although she's never seen me), or one with profile avatar of a class b porn star, or anything similar. And, there is no farm on LinkedIn :)

I use Facebook and even like it (shock! :omg: horror! :wtf: ) but the apps/games are rubbish. Farm and Mafia Wars in particular are really annoying when your friends' 'achievements' show up on your home page. Thank God FB provided a way to block applications from showing up on your home page. But I found a 'Which Friends character are you?' quiz that said I'm Chandler. :cool:

I know, bad start to a post but this is odd. I was going through the suggestions for friends and Christian came up. So I thought well it must be a small world that Christian is friends with someone I know. I clicked to see the mutual friends and there weren't any, it just must have thought I would like Christian as a person and should be his friend. Either that or they've started scanning your browser cache...:suss: Anyone else have this happen to them? I get a lot of random suggestions (not to mention the odd requests from lovely ladies with provocative profile pics that seem to know me...) but never quite this targeted.

It will also look at your interests (at least for deciding which annoying ads to present). I'll have to go make sure Code Project is in my profile...

So you want to publish your details on Facebook and then complain that they are not protecting your privacy - is it just me that sees a contradiction in this. While I don't belong to the tin beanie brigade I do consider "social networking" as the creeping cancer of the net.

I have had that before, someone from years ago was in my friends suggestion list, but has no links with any of my current friends. All I can think of is that she searched for me (my profile is hidden - well I think it is...) and it's come up on my list. Which is quite disturbing if that is the case, as who knows where I am appearing on Facebook... Might have to have a close read of the T&C's, but I bet they are rather long and tedious...

The worse is they keep on sending email reminders to those who haven't joined. Which means they keep sending email to my parents and boss to join facebook, frustating for them, bad for me

Eh - When I signed up and saw that, I thought it would be a good idea. Unfortunately, it didn't work. :sigh: Manual Friend-finding for me.... I did find it fairly obviously pointed out, though. Maybe I'm just used to installers that install Google desktop against my express refusal to let them?
