I hate all of these social networking worthless rubbish. I think twitter gives the average idiots with IQ of may be 40 +/- 5, a chance to tell the world (tweet or twaat or wtfever) about every minutia of their extremely dull and lonely life. This gives them the feeling that they're "socially active", while actually they sit in the toilet for hours, tweeting about their stinky farts. Whether or not the world gives half a shit about their mindless tweets would be a completely different thing to think about. Yeah, there may be this 1% of "interesting" tweets, but I won't give a dead rat's ass to wade through the 99% drivel. I have enough things in my life to have myself engaged with, and I have "real" friends, so I couldn't give a damn about arsebook either.

I use it to follow various well-known people in the developer community: * Scott Guthrie[^] * Scott Hanselman[^] * Ayende Rahien (aka Oren Eini)[^] * Jeff Atwood (of Coding Horror fame)[^] * Joel Spolsky[^] * DHH (creator of Ruby on Rails)[^] * John Resig (creator of jQuery)[^] * etc. I like to see what these people are talking about, in somewhat real-time. It's useful to me as another information source. I use it alongside Google Reader and news sites like Hacker News and Reddit. Sometimes you get links that you otherwise wouldn't get; sometimes you just get the info quicker than you would via blogs/news sites. It works for some people, and it doesn't work for others. If nothing else, I urge you to find and follow some people who are influential to you. Give it a couple of weeks, and if it doesn't work for you, abandon it. YMMV.

I haven't been on twitter very long and already it has been useful in the area of professional networking. I got a job offer, got some valuable info on a framework I use, and got updated on the status of VS2010. I also find that it helps me network with professionals who would be less easy to approach via other contexts, but maybe that's just me. Ignore the drivel, and don't follow people who post it - follow only the people who actually post useful things. And if that narrows it down to nothing for you, then I guess Twitter is not for you. :)

It's valuable as a mass marketing tool for certain types of things. Things like following a sports/political commentator, or following a bar to hear about drink specials/events. I don't see it as a social networking tool as much as a mass marketing tool.

I like it for receiving headlines. This way I can keep up with the news and click the link if the story intrigues me. Other than that, not really. Although I did see a pretty good article yesterday in the NY Times about recruiters/job seekers using twitter.

The only useful application of twitter I've ever seen was after an ice storm hit my area last year. The power company used it to provide updates on progress restoring power to the region. The crews all had web enabled phones and would post tweets when they arrived at a site, when they expected to have it fixed, and when they actually had it done. They also posted a series of tweets at the beginning of the day saying where they were expecting to have power restored. Given that most of my region was without power for more than a week it was good PR for the power company as it showed that they were making progress.

"NO!!" Most of times at least. I think it has some values when the person/company tweeting has some duties with the public. It helps to spread the word in an easy and world wide accessible way. But that's about it, the rest, I beleive, are just doing it because everyone is doing it (Not me of course).
