Trending topics are least common denominator garbage. Twitter has plenty of value if you are smart enough to figure it out.

Althoug it may look like it's a bunch of adolescent drivel sometimes, ironically, actual adolescents are conspicuous by their absence.

I like it for receiving headlines. This way I can keep up with the news and click the link if the story intrigues me. Other than that, not really. Although I did see a pretty good article yesterday in the NY Times about recruiters/job seekers using twitter.

The only useful application of twitter I've ever seen was after an ice storm hit my area last year. The power company used it to provide updates on progress restoring power to the region. The crews all had web enabled phones and would post tweets when they arrived at a site, when they expected to have it fixed, and when they actually had it done. They also posted a series of tweets at the beginning of the day saying where they were expecting to have power restored. Given that most of my region was without power for more than a week it was good PR for the power company as it showed that they were making progress.

"NO!!" Most of times at least. I think it has some values when the person/company tweeting has some duties with the public. It helps to spread the word in an easy and world wide accessible way. But that's about it, the rest, I beleive, are just doing it because everyone is doing it (Not me of course).

I remember when MySpace came out. My daughter (was 14 or so then) came to me & said, "Dad, can I use the computer to 'check my MySpace'?". I remember saying, "You wanna check your whaaaa??" I have been in IT for 25 years. To this day I still don't understand these social networking sites. It seems that everything you post is visible by damn near everyone else, and it's all mindless nonsense. Now, everyone can see you make a fool of youself, instead of only a select few. Why would anyone wanna do this?

ever been to a bar/pub and heard the mindless divel that goes on there? social networking sites are the new brewpubs...Whats better than going and hanging out with your friends in a bar and meeting new people than being able to do it without getting dressed or leaving the house?

Well back in the day if an idea popped into your head and you wanted everyone to know, you had to just shout it out loud so everyone could hear. The problem with this technique was you would be limited to only being able to annoy the people in the local area. That's where Twitter comes in ...

C'mon, sane people didn't yell out an idea that popped into their head. If they felt a need to tell someone their brilliant idea, they would find someone who might be interested and tell them....quietly. The potential value in twitter is connecting those people who have common interests, but because there is so much noise on Twitter, this goal is difficult to realize.

:D I'll admit I was being a little facetious with my comments. There are far to many people that constantly tweet every little thing about their day, no matter how pointless it is though. It does just seem like they have thought to themselves, "I'm really jonesing pot noodle this afternoon. The whole world now needs to know." What would they have done before Twitter to let everyone know they were having a pot noodle if it was that important?

I'm still trying to work out "they" managed to reverse construct the noun & adjective 'tweet' from 'twitter'. Wouldn't it be 'twit'? And if your English is bent towards the eastern side of the Atlantic (in other words, you speak 'English', contrary to what Microsoft & SQL Server would have us believe), that probably makes more sense.

Twitter is just a more public method of forums like this one where any idiot can spout on about topics like mid-life crisis, corvettes or even about the inane idea that is twitter. People like that should get a life... I swear I had one once ...
