Today while booking ticket in Lufthansa, It seems One way ticket to Frankfurt-Chennai is 2020 Euro whereas round trip in the same period is 630 Euros!! Can someone please explain the logic of airlines ticket charges based on the one or two way trip. I tried the same in another airlines Fly Emirates and it seems both oneway and round trip are same cost??:~

well, it's economics. If you make a one way trip, it's possible you will use another airline for the return trip; so they make you pay for it.

Agree, but i assumed that still one way trip should be marginally less than round trip but it was 3 times the Round trip :omg:

No. This is done by computers and depends on a lot of factors : number of passengers having already booked, time, date, one way or round trip, average passengers on the line, even weather or other funny parameters (lots of people tend to avoid planes by full moon, that kind of stuff). So even the software developer cannot predict what the price will be.

Yeah, I agree on the complexities, But in my case, the only variable was I added the roundtrip for some future date. I always assumed that

One way trip + one way other trip = Round trip + savings.

Savings would be 30-40 % one way cost but here it was like

one way trip >= 3 times (round way trip)

If you're not going to be on the plane flying back, they have to take extra precautions to stabilize the plane; they even might have to hire someone to fill your spot, and that is what you are paying for. :)

This is because the fuel is a minor part of the ticket price. For example the 747 is doing 4 liters of kerosene per kilometer with a cruise speed. If you divide this by let say 300 passengers you going to see how much is the fuel cost for trans-Atlantic flight/5000 kilometers/ - about a one average car tank per person.

Crazy. does that mean it's cheaper to fly on a full moon? I don't believe in that garbage so I'll happily take advantage.

Like Deyan Georgiev said, fuel is only a tiny part of the cost. They basically decide they need to generate enough revenue to cover their operating costs (which include the price of buying the place) + x% profit. They then set the prices on a system of supply and demand, and passenger profiling. It's a complex balance because obviously, they in part control the supply. The could decrease supply of a certain route in an attempt to drive up prices, but do it too much and another provider will fill the supply deficit. Single way tickets are more likely to be required by businessmen, or people on company trips, so they have less incentive to hunt out the cheapest fare, this effects the balance of demand because some people are prepared to pay a higher price, even when cheaper options exist in the market. Also, companies often have accounts with specific providers, which reduces choice, so they can offer the occasional crazy priced ticket because they know they have tied the buyer in with savings elsewhere. Rage mentioned that it's often computers that set the pricing. This will be done with the supply and demand profiles taken into account, so although the price may seem crazy to us, there is probably a logical profile behind that price that is designed to maximise long term profit.

If it bothers you, always purchase a round-trip ticket. It will cost you less to buy two roundtrip tickets than it will to purchase a single one-way ticket.

I never understood the motivation to hinder one-way travellers that much either. The official statement is "€2020 one way is the normal price, €630 round-trip is the special super extra offer with additional restrictions".

Today while booking ticket in Lufthansa, It seems One way ticket to Frankfurt-Chennai is 2020 Euro whereas round trip in the same period is 630 Euros!! Can someone please explain the logic of airlines ticket charges based on the one or two way trip. I tried the same in another airlines Fly Emirates and it seems both oneway and round trip are same cost??:~

cheers, Super ------------------------------------------ Too much of good is bad,mix some evil in it

One way tickets fit a terrorist profile. They are charging you for the extra insurance they have to take out on the aircraft.

If it bothers you, always purchase a round-trip ticket. It will cost you less to buy two roundtrip tickets than it will to purchase a single one-way ticket.

I have done it more than once. And even booked a ticket that I never used, because of an offer "train-to-flight" it was cheaper to pay flight and train than only train (german DB is quite crazy as well)

May be, people never travel one-way internationally?:~ In my case,it was very special circumstances for the one way trip with lufthansa. We always used Emirates as it is cheap

Actually, for longer vacations I'd prefer to book a forking flight (different arrival than departure) - but about a decade ago this started to fall under "one way" rules. The last time I did get a reasonable flight (with Lufthansa, no less) was on about 2001 or 2002 - went to Portugal after a business trip to france by train, then returned by plane to Germany. Of course, people never travel one-way internationally
