The ipod really did nothign new compared to what was currently on the market. In fact, there were several mp3 players that had more features than the ipod and cost less, but the Apple marketing stole the show as it usually does. Microsoft should buy them :)

I wonder if in six months everyone will refer to any tablet computer as an ipad as they did with mp3 players and the ipod came out. They surely will say over the next year or so that Apple started the tablet technology :) Wonder whent he iSlate will come out.. I can hardly image the how many more millions of apps will flood the app store now!

That thing looks hideous. It doesn't seem to do anything an iPhone can't do. FAIL. IMO.

Chances are it's powering the screen that takes most of the battery anyway, so even if there was something like that it might not make that much of a difference in the end.

Almost certainly. N270 netbooks spend roughly half their power on the screen; and one of the reasons (besides cost) that IPS panels aren't used in normal laptops is that they inherently consume more power (IPS needs two transistors/pixel vs one for competing technologies). The ARM cpu probably consumes no more than a watt, two at most, of power which means the vast majority will be going into the screen. I'm also curious about what the real world battery life will be; the standard laptop makers tricks of idle at desktop, wifi off, screen at minimum brightness are already looking fairly blatant with netbooks. The iPad is going to be even more sensitive to this because of it's lower overall power. Personally I don't expect it to sell that well. It's too big to be portable (the 10" kindle DX has suffered badly due to this). At 1.5 lbs it's about as heavy as a hardback book which means holding it to watch for an extended period of time is going to be inconvenient. The combination of it's higher price and the limitations of an LCD screen mean it's not a viable threat to eInk readers even ignoring the bulk/weight problem. To really be useful it needs a next generation screen; either one of the eInk killers (color, fast enough for video, negligible to zero idle power draw) or maybe OLED (not sure exactly how much power savings this really offers). Once one of these technologies becomes available in sufficient volume/low enough price i could see a v2/3 successor taking off; but evne Apple will be hard pressed to run the hype machine up to epic levels on the successor to a dud.

iPod sales didn't start all that great and the product would have failed had it not been for its killer app--the Apple Music store. What surprises me today is that you can go to Walmart or Best Buy and get a really good MP3 player for under $50. Yet, right next to them are iPods and Zunes with the same feature set for four times as much.

That was my first response. I actually thought the photographs were a joke from the Onion or another spoof site.

They could cut out the middle man and just copy off the guys that Apple copy from now.

Heard a good one on the radio this morning. Caller says that IPad sounds like a type of tampon. (Not as absorbent, but definitely a different market.)

I refer to my mp3 player as a "fauxpod".
