The floormat explaination always sounded like a load of crap to me and although a gas pedal getting stuck is a little more plausable I still doubt that is the explaination. The reason I say this is alot of the people said their car took off like a rocket. If the cause was the gas pedal getting stuck then you should only accelerate as much as when you last pressed it. Take this crash that happened yesterday http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/video?id=7243578[^]. This woman was parking her car when it took off and went through what was partially a brick wall. And the witnesses said she was going very fast when it happened. I don't know about you but I usually am not pressing the gas pedal very hard when I'm parking so why would it have accelerated so much in that short distance? My bet is they have a software bug they can't find or a problem with some sensor although I think the first one is more likely.

probably part of the accelerator pedal assembly (mechanical, sensors, software, ...); I don't know to what extend the supplier makes only the pedal or the whole assembly (containing the pedal) that plugs in the engine.

All the cars were made in haunted factories. Poltergeists, obviously. They have had a hard time finding priests travelling in pairs to fix it.

That still sounds more likely than the floormat explaination.

Software sounds plausible. The manufacturer of the part may no longer work for Toyota, it depends on where the blame ends up.

Let's not overlook the simple explanation - she pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal. Just saying...

Sounds more like she just hit the gas instead of the brake.

I know, weird right? I really think companies should just make up stuff which is so utterly ludicrous that everyone knows they are making it up, but they are a little afraid to call them on it. "We had swamp gas reflecting off of a weather balloon and that's why the 2015 Pinto model explodes when you pop open the trunk. We recommend either making sure there is no swamp gas within 1500 miles or not opening your trunk. We are working with the weather balloon on solving this."

That's possible but it's not like she's the only one who has reported that happening. One guy who crashed was going over 100+ mph and actually had time to call 911 about it before crashing.

Hold on a minute. Why couldn't he just turn the engine off? Are cars so computerized that the ignition switch isn't really a switch anymore?
