Haha, damn, you fixed the links before I could reply. Seems like Maunder himself was bit by the bug where the "Do not interpret HTML tags" checkbox gets checked automatically. That makes me a little bit happy. ;P

I can't find that one on Amazon. The ones I found were 6 lb. I was hoping for something in the 4 lb and under bracket. I like the one Rama linked to. It's $2500 in Oz. I am thinking of ordering something and having it waiting for me when I go over in March.

It's one thing to carry a 6 lb notebook into another room. It's another to have it strapped to your back, with hard drives, cameras, GPS, books, etc. during the 30 odd hours it takes me to get from DFW to Hobart.

OK, but it doesn't look like Amazon has those. I AM browsing at 56k ( I am over my 10 gig limit, thanks Apple for that ), so that is cramping my style a little.

Sony Vaio X. 650g. Wicked. Or, if it's a dev machine, Sony Vaio SX. A bit heavier   - but not much and serious grunt

I thought Sony was the root of all evil, or something like that. How can you patronize such bad, bad people? And yes, I looked at the crappy Flash pages, which only serves to reinforce my impression that clearly they're the spawn of the devil, or at the very least were covertly instrumental in the design and implementation of Clippy.

I have wireless, when I hit 10 GB a month, I get shaped to 56k.   Sadly, the latest iPhone SDK was 2.5 GB, and now I am hosed.   Only until next Tuesday tho.

I'd like to buy a new notebook. My requirements are : 1 - light 2 - able to be used as a dev machine 3 - light 4 - not heavy Seriously, I want a machine for a couple of things: 1 - I want to be able to wipe it and use it to do clean machine Windows 7 installer testing 2 - I want it to be light because I'd take it on US trips, and so I'd have to use it as a dev machine for 2 weeks at a time. So, I expect light to mean a bit slower, but I want it to be usable all the same. Recommendations ?

Unsure if it's mentioned, but I like Acer laptops. Cheap, mostly light, down n dirty. best part: it doesn't fuss when you install another OS like ubuntu, and last one I bought had min bloat wear. lacks on the battery though ( least the one I bought). (edit) going by above specs... I diffently say Acer.

For what little it may be worth, I'll chime in and say that the 17" MacBook Pro I bought a few months ago is the first laptop I've ever genuinely liked. Unfortunately, I think there are some hiccups installing Windows 7 via BootCamp (I haven't tried myself), so this may put it out of contention for your purchase because of 2) on your list of tasks you'd like to use the laptop for in the immediate future. In addition, you'd have to shell out $$$ for the Windows 7 copy on top of the already-pricey MacBook Pro. All of the other laptops I've had (HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, non-Pro MacBook) have, IMHO, sucked royally. They all had one or two things that just made them infuriating to work with - keyboard size and/or feel, screen glare, crappy battery life, shockingly slow disk access, etc... . Are you sure there's no room in your carry-on luggage for a mini-tower? ;)

You got that problem as well? I usually hit it just a few days before the end of the month (mine is 30gig tho but the digital tv downloads are eating away at it).
