Have messed a day with VirtualBox now, the ride was not without bumps (need to hack registry to get shared folders to work with Win 7). But when everything is up and running I have to say it's way better than VPC 2007. Compilation on shared folder works pretty good, performance isn't that bad at all. I'm glad I got my old environment in a VPC now so next time I write off a machine I just copy my virtual machine and I'm good to go! :jig:

Can't understand why your having problems with shared folders, I'm running under Weven and haven't had that problem? VirtualBox is powerful and there's a way to clone virtual disks check it out here[^] Mike

Also If you dont like working in small window (its not the case with VirtualBox, unless you have 24" screen), then the best way is to use "Remote Desktop" to the VirtualBox from your Host PC. The mouse movements will be much more smoother.

vmware-server is slow and has not been updated in at least 8 months. vmware-player does get updated but has more limitations especially when it comes to guest SMP.

I use WMWare Player 3, It is free and allows 4CPUs in the guest. The reason I choose it over VirtualBox is that it had better graphics support, and speed wise was slightly faster

I tried using VirtualBox and it refused to install XP; VirtualBox kept faulting when copying files. I was able to install 2008 Server and run it briefly until VirtualBox started faulting repeatedly. When it did run, I ran a comparison between it and VPC 2007. I found that VPC was faster. Not by much, but faster.

I installed Win98, Win2k, XP (both32 and 64-bit, and Windows 7 (both 32 and 64-bit) in VirtualBox on a Win7 64-bit Host, and didn't have a problem with any of 'em...

I have 24" Wide screen monitor and its not showing full screen. it is big but not enough, also its square and not wide screen. I have installed windows server 2008 and VirtualBox is not supporting 1920 x 1200. that's what I told him that its not the case generally, unless you have 24" screen.

Performance blows everything out of the box, literally :) On my i7, I can run a 4 core Linux VM without even noticing the impact!

I have done tests in the past on VPC2007 and VirtualBox with Vista 32 host and XP 32 guest. Apart from the fact that VPC crashed every time I tried to install a certain mission-critical app on the guest (and VirtualBox didn't) I found VirtualBox very noticeably faster. I have been using it ever since.
