I bought the Compaq notebook. At 2.4 kg, it's not much lighter than my old, 3kg notebook. When it starts, it says 'Setup is preparing your computer for first time use'. I turned it off in this step last night, when I first just tried to power it up in the car. Now it says 'Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation'. I've tried last know good, etc. The computer does not come with install DVDs, which I am still furious about. This is my introduction to Weven.

CG you seriously can't be after sympathy for such a stupid move as closing the laptop during initial setup. That is called self inflicted pain.

I turned it on to see if the battery came charged, and as I was in the car, I turned it off. The question is, why would it be so fragile ? Pushing F11 let me reset the install, the notebook is working now.

Speaking of that I installed Windows 7 on two machines today (one rebuild and other upgrade from Vista) and no problems at all.
Weven seems fine so far, not that I've done much. I restored the system, set it up, installed my web cam ( automatic driver installation still does not work ) and had a quick video chat to test it. Now I am creating my restore DVDs.

That's not a weven thing it's a compaq initial setup thing.
// Steve McLenithan
Sure - I meant it as a 'just my luck' comment, not a 'Weven sucks' comment. Those will come later today :P

*grin* it does seem to me like it should be a bit more robust, and that I shouldn't have needed an online PC to find out that F11 would reset the machine, but, my comment wasn't designed to get sympathy, or to criticise Compaq or Weven. It was more a 'just my luck' comment. Fact is, I was in the car, having just bought it, and I thought I'd see if the battery came charged. When it started to boot, I turned it off, because I was unable to set it up, but I hoped to do it a bit later on. I ended up not able to do it before this morning.

Others have flamed you (well, maybe with a Bic lighter) on this, so I suppose I shouldn't waste my time contributing to the warmth of your toosh. I guess you haven't bought a laptop in a while, if ever? ;) Marc

Many years experience have taught me never to do anything that may require more than three neurons firing at once whilst not sat at a table with plenty of time. I have a weven upgrade disk, but shall not do it for a couple more weeks, as I have things to do that MUST be done, before risking a failed upgrade. Still, Man points for doing it in the car, minus man points for switching off.

Yes. I suspect I am going to be happy with it.

Christian, it's not called "luck". Glad there is an F11, I didn't know that either.

I have never bought a notebook that didn't come with install DVDs before, nor have I had one that had this sort of convuluted setup process, no. I've bought plenty of notebooks, they all just booted when I first started them, with maybe a nag screen I could kill. I lie, I suspect my Acer did something similar to this, and I don't know how fragile it was, but I had DVDs I could just put in to restore it if I'd had to. Having googled, I found out that F11 lets me reset the computer, I just didn't have that written down anywhere. I am burning restore DVDs now, but I am pretty disgusted they did not provide pressed DVDs. Beyond that, it's all good.

No, that's your first introduction to Compaq. Don't blame Weven for an idiotic installation practice by HP (or for your own foolishness in poweing it off in the middle of setup). There may be a recovery partition accessible from the bios or boot options. As for the install DVD's, well caveat emptor - that would have been a no-go for me - again HP cheapness.

Well, I was looking for a cheap notebook and this was the only one that fit the bill. I wasn't blaming Weven ( as I said above ), I was just making a joke about how I appear to be cursed more often than not.

I only read code that is properly formatted, adding PRE tags is the easiest way to obtain that.

A step later, it would have told you that it won't install without a fixed power supply, and shut down nicely.
