I do it all the time. In fact that was the solution we used internally to avoid messing up people computers with different types of VPN software.

BTW, your regular internet connection can't be used while you're using VPN.

Speaking of, it would be nice to be able to fix that. Suppose I wanted to connect to work on my home computer, I'd probably use another computer if I wanted to browse the internet without it going through my connection to work. Know of a way to use VPN and use my internet without my traffic going over my (monitored) work network?

Are you still using XP? It seems that Microsoft fixed that for Vista and 7.

        I'm using Server 2008 R2. I don't think it's a VPN problem so much as group policy.

Haha, I had anticipated that response and meant to include "on the same computer", but it seems I forgot. Oh well, I have an extra laptop, so no matter. :)

I connect to a VPN, which disables my web access unless I go through their proxy. I do something on their server, then forget I'm connected and notice my web isn't working, so I repair my connection, which disconnects the VPN. All is well for a few minutes until I need the VPN again, and I connect to the VPN, only to later discover no web. I've repeated this at least three times in the last hour.

Or connect to the VPN from a VM running in your computer. The VM software and group policy might mess with the VM's IP routing/connection, but they don't even see your normal connection, which remains internet capable. Works great with VMWare...

It can be done, but has to be set-up on the device you're connected to. Most times, admins do not want to do that, since that also creates a 'leak' into the network, where access to your computer from a hacker, also means access to the corporate network for that same hacker. I know I can still browse the 'net over my DSL-line when connected to VPN.... (Of course, I was network administrator when we started using VPN and thus I set it up, with this exception for the IT-department :P)

Nah... What's up, Doc? CCC's solved : 1 If a bus station is where a bus stops, and a train station is where a train stops, why do I have a work station on my desk?

That's odd. When I VPN to my work network, only work network traffic goes through the VPN, all my other connections are direct. I don't remember changing any of the default settings either.

I don't see why not. It's just a case of getting the routing set up properly. We have a VPN to the Chicago office (from the UK), and internet access works fine.

Can. You will have to monkey with routing tables though.

There is a TCP option in the Microsoft client that forces all external traffic through the VPN, if you disable that option, it should fix your problem. I can't remember exactly where it is in the advanced dialogs, since I don't have access to that version from work.

Of course you can! Just check the 'Enable LAN' option, and make sure your default gateway is not overwritten by the VPN connection.
