Audio input not working... XP PRO and without modification...

Hello all, In my company we use Skype in order to call to a lot of countries saving money each month. The problem is that today the computer were it is installed has stopped working with the microphone... I'm trying to say that I've plugged that microphone into several computers and it works perfectly. But (the usual user has promised that to me) without changing anything suddenly it has stopped working. I've tried to reinstall audio drivers without luck. I've tried to use the sound recorder without luck. I've tried to reinstall skype without luck. I've been searching into the Internet in order to try to find what could happen, but till now the found answers are not useful... So, now I'm here asking the powerful CPians: what could I do? Of course I've thought on throwing that PC out of the window, but this is not the good way to go... THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR TIME AND JOB.

Don't you just love it when they say that? About two hours later, they normally follow it up with "But I didn't think that (installing xxx/deleting yyy/playing quake) would change anything." Can you go back to a previous system restore point?

I hate to ask the obvious, but: -- Have you gone Volume Control > Options > Properties, and checked that the mic is active in the Recording list? -- Have you been to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio, and checked that the default sound recording device hasn't been changed while installing/uninstalling some idiot's freeware app?

Don’t worry it’s the Skype’s fault - it’s trying to adjust the microphone and pushing the volume too low. Just go to the Skype options and find some check box labeled with something like “Allow application to adjust record devices” and uncheck it. After that just adjust the microphone volume from Windows recording device settings. Also if you have the VoipRider it makes the same.

Yes I do... but in this case I can say that I trust that guy... usually I would say that the person that has told me "I've not touched anything" would be guilty, but in that case... it has been Skype's fault... Incredible but right... PS: I've tried to go back to a restore point and it has not worked properly... X| Thank you!

This happened to me too - but since I don't use Skype or the microphone very often I haven't bothered to fix it, I'd be interested in a solution though!
Deyan Georgiev has given me the right info... You should disable the checkbox that allows Skype to modify the windows settings and then set them again to the defaults (reinstalling the drivers has worked for me). Good luck!
