I'm repairing a laptop that belonged to a friend. Didn't even realize it had had Norton installed until I started digging through the registry - the only symptom was flaky network connections (as in, no ability to talk to the DHCP server, no loopback address, nothing useful whatsoever...) This machine had two other virus scanners, 4 spyware scanners, and a host of assorted games and shovelware installed on it. Wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Norton shipped with it and was badly removed when the trial expired. For my own machines, I use clean Windows installations, and am careful to never let AV software anywhere near them.

Norton Anti-Virus is itself a virus. Even using the removal tool, vestigial remains continue to haunt your computer until the disk is formatted. And I wouldn't be surprised if the virus writers at Norton have a devised a technique to somehow leave traces behind even after a disk format.

A trick you used to be able to do on Win '98 was to uninstall NA, clear out any file detritus manually, then use Norton's own system cleaner to find and fix any snafus caused. I've never installed it on a machine later than Win '98, so I don't know if that still works.

I had the same issue when fixing a friends laptop, which was infested with viruses. Anyway, a previous uninstalled version of Norton was still pissing about with the wireless drivers, luckily I had a ethernet cable to hand so just plugged the laptop straight into the router. Like you I had to download the specialist removal tool to get rid of it. What a pile of stinking steaming yesterdays hot-curry-and-lots-of-beers faecal matter Norton AV is. :mad:
