Back to the Moon

Oh, and now the 1 votes... I guess I'd better stop voicing my own opinion and join the circle jerk, hadn't I?

We are hoping to collect the million signatures within 3 months; however, we hope to get far more than that.
Might want to change the wording. You basically just said "we hope to get 1 million, but we hope to get more". Kinda like saying "we hope to get 1 million, but we hope to get 2 million, but we hope to get 3 million, but we hope to get more". Anyway, I didn't sign. I don't see why we need another moon mission. Been there, done that; there was no cheese. Unless we actually build a moon base or something, that'd be pretty useless.
Then practice speaking Chinese. The moon is the high ground.

So if I don't go to the moon, I'll have my limbs chopped off and I'll become an embittered Jedi?

Interesting I took that for granted, sooner or later we have to explore living under those conditions, how the hell else are we going to exploit the system.

Yeah, they have people living in space, but still none actually living on the moon. It's about time they got on that.

With good reason. "The Lunar outpost will be an inhabited facility on the surface of the Moon which NASA currently proposes to construct over the five years between 2019 and 2024. The United States Congress has directed that the U.S. portion, "shall be designated the Neil A. Armstrong Lunar Outpost." ~ National Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 2008 [^]

I hope it is okay to post this link here. The site below is only intended to gather signatories for a petition to get the Moon landings reinstated. It carries no advertising and will not use any of the collected data for anything other than the petition. It will also remain non-partisan. If this breaks any rules then I apologise and will, of course delete the post immediately. Tychotics[^] I would also appreciate any constructive criticism or suggestions. Thanks
What a waste of money. List a single reason to go back to the moon (I can think of one). Rather than collect signatures so the government can steel my money for this folly, why not collect millions of dollars from each one of you dreamers and fund it yourself?

And neither was mine.

Would create direct benefits (for everyone) by the advances in medicine and technology that would be created by further space exploration. I have a few more but I'll be adding a page of reasons later today. What is your single reason?

If I thought that would work I would: the best I can do is collect signatures in the hope that it'll have the desired impact. Besides, there's a lot of stuff I hate contributing taxes to but there are some things that simply need to be done and I believe returning to the Moon is one of those things. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Won't sign--it's all very old technology, a government boondoggle. If you want to explore space, kill NASA. It has degenerated into an entrenched government bureaucracy that has rusted and siezed up. When there is an economic reason for space travel, it will develop as quickly as the Internet. Until then, it is a waste of money.

There's an easy way to fund the mission - advertising, I bet McDonalds would pay anything to install a huge yellow 'M' that could be seen my the entire population of earth every night.

what's so wrong with going to Mars?
Nothing, but without the continuation of the Constellation heavy lifter program, neither Moon nor Mars will happen. The revived moon project was meant to be just a stepping stone to Mars...

Is that actually true? What about private industry? There are private companies which could potentially take up the slack. In fact, didn't the original announcement say that they invited development from private companies, or am I mistaken? Anyway, moon landings (maybe Mars?) will happen. No doubt. The only doubt is whether or not the US will be the one. To be honest, getting to Mars will be a HUGE and expensive endeavor, and I think it will take several countries working together to achieve it. That's where we need to be looking, towards cooperation, not springing for the whole thing ourselves.

It hasn't so far, contrary to many claims. The manned spaced program has been romantic, but hasn't done anything to advance technology. Beyond that, how would a moon program do such a thing? We can mimic microgravity on earth, what other benefit would being on the moon offer? (This does bear repeating. There are NO widespread inventions in use today due to the manned space program. Many of the lists circulating are completely bogus, others simply take any technology NASA used and claims that it is due to NASA. Due to the number of claims, it is very time consuming to debunk them all, but I have yet to see one hold up. BTW, even the official NASA folks concede to only about a dozen inventions, including Teflon coated fiberglass, but not Teflon itself.)

A large array telescope on the far side of the moon.

I will refrain from signing the petition because I do not live in US. However, I wanted to say the I find the site (Tychotics[^]) and the message professional, concise, and effective.
