Weven Starts Quarterly Validation

Gee - that's just great. What if I'm not online ? I just may mysteriously not be, on my one Weven machine. I OWN Weven, but I object to this. Why ? Because Microsoft can't even make their premier platform load some images without crashing or destroying them ( bugs I reported in WPF pre release are still there ). So, how can I trust my entire computing platform to this bit of code never failing ?

Jystad, 2001If it's as much of a ****-up as "genuine advantage", which still swears that one of my laptops is illegal, even after a reinstall of the OEM from the install partition, then I think I'll just give weven a miss.

If you properly own your copy of Weven, why would you care? <rant> I am not a MS fanboy but as programmers I think we are all out here to make money for what we do. If you do not charge for your services, please let me know I can send some work your way and improve my profit margins. :) And as for bugs..... I doubt any of us have written a piece of software as widely used as Windows nor with nearly the required functionallity. I mean, FTW we require MS to make the current versions of their OS backward compatible with all of the old fail software/hardware paradigms that have been replaced by 5 generations of newer standards just in case someone might still have one that they just can't upgrade. And you should all know that anything can be exploited given the desire. OSX and Linux in all its variations are buggy and exploitable as well, they are just not attacked as hard because they are not in widespread use (as compared to windows). If OSX had the 90% market share, we would be seeing apple making weekly security patches. Get a grip and if you really disaprove of MS trying to cut down on people stealing their work then uninstall their products and make the wholesale switch to Linux and open source. Can't switch to OSX cause Apple is just as bad in different application of the same issue. </rant>

Jystad, 2001What I would like to know is, IF this 'update' is to catch those using pirated versions and doesn't impact genuine installs, why oh why does it need to phone home every 90 days? My point being: if you have installed a genuine copy you're hardly likely to try and use an activation bypass crack. There's no bloody point.

Once installed, the Update protects customers by identifying known activation exploits that may affect their PC experience Phew! So that exploit not affecting my PC experience is ok with Microsoft? :rolleyes: Not much to object - if Microsoft does get it right the first time. They have a great track record with Version 1 & 2 alienating legitimate users, and being that overadministrated moloch they seem having grown into, I doubt that they are able to correct mistakes quickly. Mistakes such as: false positives, locking out users with no internet conenction, leaving a security hole in the phone-home, show annoying message boxes, demand gratuitous reboots, etc. ----- I wished they'd made "Genuine Advantage" more of a real advantage, but the benefits are laughable - in some locations the only additional feature you get is Media Player "free trials and great savings on select MSN games[^]". :wtf:

I have Windows Updates disabled on all of my machines. If I had a better router I would block and MS url.

You don't need a better router to block web sites. Use your hosts file to redirect it to localhost.

Then it tried to verify itself, it told me my copy wasn't genuine - even though I got it from direct from Microsoft. Not only that, but what happens down the road when Microsoft decides I've been using it long enough and it's time for me to "upgrade"? How about the Feds getting in the back door to disable everyone's copy of Windows "in the event of a national emergency". Knowledge is power, and if you take away the ability to gain knowledge from the people...

Someones key generator happened upon my key before I had even purchased the OS. Quick call to MS Activation Support, emailed reciept of purchase and I had a fresh key. Inconvenient, yes. End of the world, not hardly. There is no indication that MS would use a Genuine Advantage type system to disable older version of the OS to make you buy a new one. It is much more effective to call it end of life and stop providing updates/fixes. And if you chose to continue using the older version, well you are on your own. I still know of a couple Win 95 boxes in use out there today. I guess I'm not paranoid about our government doing anything stupid. Our military takes an oath to protect our constitution from all enemies whether foreign or domestic. They do not swear fealty to any person but to the people! And if our government ever tried to supplant the constitution, I have no doubt that would be quelled very quickly. And if the feds want to watch my packets flying around on the country's infrastructure I don't care because I am not breaking any laws and so it is unlikely that my information would end up anywhere but on the bit heap. Even with the cheap storage we have these days, there is no way to store every bit of transmitted information in any way that could be reliably recalled. So if you avoid questionable activities you will be ignored by big brother even if they were able to pass monitoring laws. Sometimes I just can't sit back and listen to the BS complaints about MS and have to call people on it. If people were stealing millions of dollars from your pocket each year, you would try to find ways to stop it too. And forget the argument that they have enough money. They employ thousands of folks to create and support the products we obviously want, and that has to be paid for somehow. I believe whole heartedly in capitalism and do not expect to get something for nothing.

That's all well and good, but they're going to do the same thing they did with WGA - refuse to let you download stuff from their site if WAT isn't installed. I can't remember specifically what they disallow, but I remember it being done. So yeah - it's optional (my dyin' ass).

Jystad, 2001IIRC, failed WGA would stop you downloading stuff via Microsoft/Windows Update (but you could do so manually) and stopped you installing some other apps. but produced no nagware as a result. WGA Notifications was the "phone home" service that also invoked nagware for failure. This was then beefed up in Vista to impose downgraded functionality. I'm still on XP. My approach was that I allowed WGA but disallowed WGA Notifications. That seemed a reasonable compromise. This new system is dreadful. Given industry trends MS should be trying to make Windows more attractive to users not less.

Jystad, 2001They say it's 'voluntary' but nobody seems to have pointed out what is going to happen when SP1 is released.. you can't pick and choose what gets installed during a SP upgrade! As soon as they realise that everyone is choosing not to install this update they will release a 'critical' service pack and then everyone will be forced to install it. Bah X|
