Select Windows XP Safe Mode and BSOD
-
Anyone seen this? I wanted to clear a virus off my son's PC (Windows XP SP2), and figured I could delete the offending file in Safe Mode. I did not manage to get into the boot menu via F8 so I used MSCONFIG to select Safe Mode and rebooted. The PC went into a continuous reboot - gave the Windows logo then restarted itself. Since I can't use F8, eventually I downloaded Ubuntu, started using that, and edited the BOOT.INI file. Why woud safe mode cause continuous reboot? How do I cure it without reloading XP?

The machine is probably configured to restart on a stop error, so every time it hits the fatal error, it reboots. The only way I know of to alter this setting involves use of the control panel, so if you can't get to the control panel... :sigh:

You couldn't boot off CD, into a system restore?

If he could get to the boot menu using F8, along with Safe Mode he could also select to turn off automatically reboot Windows on error.

Sometimes support.microsoft.com[^] is useful.

As I said, I've solved the restart problem using an Ubuntu boot CD (turned off safe mode in boot.ini) - my question was more about why it reboots in safe mode, but behaves "normally" when I do not try to go into safe mode. I guess it will stay one of life's great mysteries.

One reason is a totally corrupt installation. Been there. Sometimes you can solve this by upgrading the OS to itself, assuming you have the install discs. (BTW, OS2 2.0 used to do this and there was nothing you could do except a complete reinstall with all 33 3.5 inch floppies.)
