Don't worry, no chilly subject. I have a friend who bought a Dell, and I advised her to make an image of the disk before installing anything new, just in case, although I have myself no experience with image applications. The machine comes with Windows 7 Family edition, and AFAIK there is an image application in Windows 7. So here the naive questions: Does the image have to be as big as the hd of the laptop, or is some kind of compression possible (as only a few gb are used for the moment) ? e.g.would a few DVDs be sufficient for the back up, or does she need a separate disk ? Is the image application that comes with windows reliable ?

The Image utility that comes with Win 7 is awesome. It uses its own compression method, and the total size of the Backup on DVD can be far less than the USED SPACE on the hard disk. And yes, its reliable, the only catch is when you have to restore the image, use the last disk first... :)

Thank you very very much. Do you have any idea how many DVDs are required for a blank Win 7 Family install ? ( Is it about 4, about 10 or about 50) ?

Only Two DVDs should be sufficient.
