False Positive Virus Alerts!

Yesterday we deleted several files off our network because the virus checker (McAfee) said they were infected with 'W32/insane.dam'. It turns out there is no virus and its is a problem with compatibility between the engine and the definitions! It didn't mention the problem when the definitions were downloaded, even though McAfee know about it. When people saw that they had a virus and the files could not be cleaned only deleted, they naturally deleted them. What a mess! So if you have an 'oldish' version of McAfee (we only bought ours earlier this year) then watch out when you download definitions. Apparently the only fix is to buy the new engine. Great! X| Ali

yup - sitting on the sofa - wondering what my little boy thought of what he was watching. but then again his favourite programs at the moment are the 'you've been framed' camcorder calamity type shows - he has a sick sense of humour.

Yeah and they also have problems setting the correct access rights for their directories. On my W2k machine a normal user account has per default not sufficent access rights for the auto update to work. If I as admin updated the virus definition and looged into as a normal user after that, McAfee reported no virus definition present. After I changed to full access for all users, everything started to work again. If auto update has only read access it should be disabled, but the engine should still be able to work. If something different is required, than the needed access rights should be set during installation. Sorry for the long post, but I also had my share of McAffee anoyances. As a software developer I am able to copy with that, but what would a normal user do ? Sometimes I believe life is also only a real time 3D graphics simulation. But the rules engine is really fkd up.

Martin Bohring wrote: Sorry for the long post, but I also had my share of McAffee anoyances Thats OK, feel free to get it off your chest. I'll add another too - a mate saw their 'spam blocker' program advertised for $29, bought it and literally the next week they changed the price to $19. Lovely! Ali

What are you using? Last time I checked, Norton didn't support XP, and McAfee doesn't seem to support 98. I have a client that has 98, NT, 2000, and XP OS's, and I'd like a virus scanner that supports all 4 OS's. Talk about OS hell. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Marc Clifton wrote: McAfee doesn't seem to support 98 The version I installed for a client worked fine, it was just off the shelf of OfficeMax about a year ago. Checking McAfee's site confirms that the latest home version works with "Microsoft® Windows® XP, 2000 Pro, Windows® Me, or 98" but I don't see any such info for the Business side of things.
