    I've been thinking about returning to school part-time to earn a Master's degree - likely in Computer Science. Does anyone have any opinions about the loads of online schools and programs that are out there? If anyone has their degree from one of these programs - have you found any negative views about the source of your degree during job interviews? Or have these become accepted as a valid part of education? Thanks

      Well, I just have a Bachelor's from a state university, but from what I've heard on the grape vine (What a silly expression)... Most of what I've heard says the online-only schools are generally considered "lesser" institutions. I haven't heard very much about the online versions of actual universities (Phoenix comes to mind, since they're on an advertising blitz), but a friend of mine was looking at their prices, and unless she missed something, it looked like they were charging almost as much for online tuition as you'd pay for normal tuition and housing combined. It might be different for Computer Science, as the people I've talked to are in other fields, and I might be completely wrong... But that's my two cents.

      Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

        I don't think so, I've head similar things about it as well.

          I have no degree at all, but everything I've seen about these online schools and from them, looks shonky to me.

            Shame you are in the US, here in Blighty we have the Open University[^] that is very well respected.

              If it's an accredited university with a campus as well your degree won't look any different than one from someone who attended in person. If it's not an accredited institution I can give you a life experience diploma for half what they charge. :rolleyes:

              3x12=36 2x12=24 1x12=12 0x12=18

                DETC[^] acts in a manner similar to the regional accreditation agencies. "DETC accreditation is just as valid as any regional accreditation, and the Secretary of Education has officially recognized DETC since 1959 and by the Council for Higher Education and its predecessors since 1975."

                  Well, I've never had an employer ask me about the college I attended. It is on my resume though. It might be different for a Masters, but my experience with my BS is that employers don't interrogate you about your education. As long as you seem competent and intelligent, I don't see how that would be relevant anyway. I'm guessing it's enough that you had formal education; not so much where that education was.

                    If I saw that you went back to school rather than changing jobs or doing self study, I would interrogate you in a interview. Why would you spend a bunch of money for something that you could probably get by studying yourself - and much faster too. What did you actually learn that will be valuable to your job. Like someone else said, spending 2+ years getting another degree doesn't seem to be an efficient use of one's time and energies. Experience counts way more.
