This happens all the time in the Middle East, where firing guns has been a form of celebration for ages. Quite often, in football matches, guns are fired upwards and the bullet gor up and comes down again allowing for wind and the original angle, it has a high chance of hiiting someone. What I can't understand is why they use live ammo.

With automatic weapons you need something to provide the kick for reload. That means either using live ammo or putting some kind of restriction on the barrel to give some back pressure. Of course you need to remove the restriction when you change from blank to live so people might prefer to use live all the time if they are likely to need to use their AK for real all of a sudden.
