what programmer am I?
-
haven't worked with java. But given a program I'd somehow research and do it. In the interview I may not do all that well at answering questions; I probably won't have a squat idea about questions they'd be asking. But while programming I might have gone through those concepts without noticing it. I believe that there are programmers of this sort. What do you call one such programmer?

I only use VB and C# (Ok a bit of html too, but only when nobody's looking).

A lot of people don't interview well. It took me a while to develop it better and I still struggle with it. Sadly great programmers can be overlooked because they don't interview well and some managers are looking for the 'perfect' fit. It can be pretty tough to get through that sometimes, but try not to let it get to you. I love (sarcasm here) how some people think you can have experience in everything. My favorite being more years experience than exist in a particular technology.

"Very good programmer who rarely clears an interview"?
Me, I'm dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest.
Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for...modified on Thursday, February 25, 2010 9:48 AM

Depending on the mood I'm in, I might call him Susan or Francesca. Occassionally, I might descend into the wonderful world of whimsy (that's what www really stands for) and call her Hieronymous, or Horatio, or Hubert, or even Engelbert. I will never call them Friday though.

I was once asked to implement a smart pointer template class in an interview, and their real problem was that they needed a USB device driver. Idiots. As for what I would call you, well, not very focused. You HAVE to kow how to take requirements, refine them, design the product, and implement it. Get the first 3 right and the last is a no brainer.
