So I'm off to get a new mobile. Veering toward the Samsung Jet as it has a better (if marginally smaller) screen than the iPhone (3.1" v 3.4"). I agonise over mobiles for some bizarre reason and will take weeks to decide which one I want before going to the shop and changing my mind. I buy cars and houses with less deliberation! Never really fancied the iPhone and not mad on the Blackberry I have now (screen too small to watch anything comfortably on). So here I go again. Sure I'll be back in half an hour, empty handed...

Don't do it, my girlfriend has had one since last August, and it's pretty frustrating to use. Although the screen is pretty and everything (AMOLED), it's of the resistive variety, very poor accuracy and bad at recognising presses. While I applaud your decision to avoid the iPhone, look at phones that are capacitive screens (which the iPhone and most every touch screen handset uses these days).

I think you should also consider Nokia N900, specially if you are a bit geekish - I reckon we all are on this forum :)

As with all phones, you'll have a 7 day cool off, so not to worry if it does turn out to be cack :)

Yes, indeed; still I think you should univote me: I've had it an hour and I'm already not convinced. Still, I have a very cheap contract (£10 pm) and have added unlimited web access for £7.50 pm. The phone was £200 so not terribly expensive compared to a new £30 a month contract that would give me comparable minutes (my way is £26 less!). At this rate it'll take me years to decide on the next one!

As is the way of the Lounge ;) I'd recommend an Android handset, and as one other has mentioned, the Nokia N900 is pretty decent. SIM only is the way forward, and even spending £400 on a handset upfront, though it may seem utterly insane, is cheaper over 2 years than £35/40 a month contracts that get jammed down your throat :)

Heh, good luck. There is so much choice at the moment though! I'm stuck in the middle of a T-Mobile contract at the moment. But were I able to choose at this moment, I'd opt for a simplicity from O2 via Quidco (£100 cashback, great website if you've not heard of it), and either a Nexus one (about £350 direct from Google), or a Motorola Milestone via Expansys. Hopefully that'll get you started!

I got one of those at the weekend & so far I'm really happy with it. What's you experience been like?

i think it absolutely rocks ... the battery lasts well over a full day (usually more like 2 days) when i switched off all the background crap and auto-sync crap that i don't like or use as an always connected computing device it is without equal in my experience ... i have it unlocked so that when travelling (like now in the US) i get a local SIM and pay local rates i am very very happy with it and am starting to code for it as well :)
