It's making sure you are who you say you are. By god, it's taking identity cards to a new level.

and it probably costs an arm and a leg too. :)

I only read code that is properly formatted, adding PRE tags is the easiest way to obtain that.

Yeah, but when I get paid, I don't go down to Payroll to get my check. It's usually direct deposit, or it gets mailed. Biometric is taking things way to far for something that simple. It'd be far cheaper to just check the drivers license or state ID card.

Obviously this is a more paranoid organisation, and I was being facetious.

                  You mean there's another way?

There are way too many factors to give you a decent answer without some more details. If all you need is security for the payroll administrator then the built in fingerprint reader on lots of laptops might be OK (although not as secure as you might think). But if your requirement is not just for indentification but also a time clock system then that means an entirely different class of devices. The last biometric system I worked with was used for bus drivers to clock in and out. They had gone with a relatively cheap system and then ran into lots of issues. The hardware was not very tough, and did not stand up well to the 130 degree temperatures and exhaust fumes encountered in the bus garage. They also had problems because the fingerprint reader didn't have a good contrast range and therefore had difficulty reading a wide variety of skin tones.
