So, Telstra won't refund me the $400 for the modem they sold me, which they said would upload 2 GB in 15 min, and it took 10 hours. Do any aussies know if my next step is trade practices, or if it's the telecommunications ombudsman ?

That needs about 18 Mbps upload - extremely unlikely that you'd get that. Maybe they meant download speeds?

He said, and I quote, "Ah billabong, mate, if I were a sheila kiwi it'd be bloody kiwi, but since there's other things a foot, barbie and where's me beer, it'd be some bloody limey". No idea what any of that means.

Yeah, I got that but don't expect to get 18 Mbps upload on a home connection any time soon, even with a different ISP! Unless you move to Tokyo, Japan where that's probably an entry level home ISP starter account!

Presumably this is the modem you posted in the thread below? If so, have a look at http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/1954-15/current/pdf/1954-15.pdf[^]. You may find items of interest there.

*grin* yeah, it seemed huge when he offered it, but I'd not done the math. He did, he used a calculator and double checked on my request.

Because I live in the country, for people in out lying areas, Telstra is the only option ( so yes, they are still a monopoly for some people, but they do have competition in all the cities ).

Then you should abandon hope, for it is certain that no government functionaries will know up from down.

Lodge a complaint with the ombudsman if they refuse to help you. I've found with Telstra, if you can get an aussie on the other end of the support line, they tend to be more helpful. Case in point, my old man went over his quota by ~$700 and I made a call on his behalf. Spoke to a gentleman by the name of David in Melbourne, he wiped the excess usage charge without me even having to argue. It helps if you're calm and respectful when speaking to them cuz they're used to dealing with morons all day long.

No kidding. I was in Japan for a couple of weeks, and believe it or not, I got blazing (Mbps) download speeds in my hotel room. I was downloading large stuff just for kicks; watching the progress bar go that fast was freaking amazing :)
