I swear, the one thing that must get drilled into their heads is "Always ask for example code when you post your questions to the websites!" How else can it be that so many "urgent give me codez" posts are exactly alike? I subscribe to a few lists that deal with programming microcontrollers, and they too attract the "urgentz codez" posts. The thing that struck me, however, was how alike the posts are to the ones we see on PC programming websites.

It is not near as bad on this forum as others. The sad thing is that those same people write the software we use everyday. Everything from cellphones to cars are written by those very same posters.

No, not really. The outsourced morons by and large are writing web pages for small companies who know they need a web presence, but have no idea why it should cost more than $200 to get one.

Yeah, I realised as I wrote it that the fact they are on a microcontroller site makes it worse than I thought. I still think the *bulk* of these people are writing company websites and the like, tho. The ASP.NET forums have always had far more clueless morons than the winforms ones.

Going back to 1979, I suppose I was just as annoying. I was a kid back then and just had soldered together my little computer. Whenever there was time, I raided one of the few then brand new computer stores and tried out a TRS-80, a Apple II or whatever I could get my hands on before being thrown out of the store. At least some of those posts come from people who are no professionals and just are learning. And some may even be kids and don't know any better. At least when I see posts which obviously are from kids who just don't know that they have bitten off a little to much with their ambitious little projects, I can't really be angry. It reminds me of the days when I was thrown out of those stores.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Then I do something which nobody understands. After that the computer does something which nobody understands. When asked, I say things about the results which nobody understand. But everybody expects miracles from me on a regular basis. Looks to me like the classical definition of a wizard.

Im starting to wonder if these outsourced morons ;-) buy their qualifications off eBay.. Could be a potential (ironic) business there for any Developers made redundant by the use of these idiots.

Well, I witnessed first hand all the people on my course at Uni who'd go to the tutor asking for "worked samples" and would keep on at him until they got something that was pretty much the expected answer, just with a few parameters switched. Then they'd ask one of us to help them get it working. For some reason this was considered to be "using their initiative" rather than just being clueless timewasters :sigh:

Oh well, these kind of people, will never make it in the real world, probably move onto something else when they realise creating software requires skill.

No, they don't, at least not in the long term. I have seen one too many horrible projects where somebody patched together the entire application with borrowed code. Actually, I'm retiring such a thing right at the moment. It's obvious that everything was stitched together from different sources and it's also obvious that the 'developer' did not understand much of anything he did. Each and every approach is a bad choice, probaly borrowed from the first piece of code he could get his hands on. Using C#, the good man obviously had no clue about object orientation. Everything is packed into one class with static methods. For the 'data layer' (not that there really are any layers) he got creative by assembling SQL strings with three or four monstrous methods which consist of a few thousend lines of spaghetti code. You better not dare to change anything in there or else you risk having serious side effects in other SQL strings which may be constructed in there. I could write a book about how not to write an application, using this thing as an example. This Frankenstein application would make a great centerpiece for the coding horrors forum. That kind of a 'professional' is what those lazy methods turn you into. They lead straight to the Dark Side. But it looks like I indirectly profited from his cheating. I now have his job.

A while ago he asked me what he should have printed on my business cards. I said 'Wizard'. I read books which nobody else understand. Samples can help to turn people into the right direction and I have no problems with that as long as I have the impression that they are honestly interested in learning. The lazy ones will not get very far as they never really understand what they are doing. In the long run they mostly cheat themselves.

I used to teach Physics, and I can tell you, the most effective way to teach people a new subject, is just to work out all the homework for them. In fact, that is what we were instructed to do at grad school. The deep thinking about inter-related concepts happens at a much later stage in learning, unless you are an intellectual outlier. At the beginning, people just need to see examples, not just for understanding the concepts, but for understanding the syntax as well. Nothing is more effective than an example.
