Do you get a 'fish-hook' sensation in your vision too? It sounds like a migraine though.

If you mean does the flashing lights look like a 'hook', then kind of yeah. It's like a malformed semi circle. Again only in the left eye.

That is conclusive then, it is a migraine. Take an aspirin abd sit in a darkened room for a while. (Don't drive!)

Anyone else get headaches with flashing lights in your eyes? I can't work out what triggers mine. Sometimes I think it's to do with light - if there's something bright in the corner of my eyes then it might set it off. I always get the flashing light in my left eye only, but it still leaves me unable to focus. I've been doing nothing for the last 10 minutes as I couldn't focus on the screen! Anyone got any tips/remedies for these type of headaches? TIA X|

I know it sounds crazy, but it has something to do with the moon too. Full moon and tides, I believe.

I thought he would mention retinal detachment, but that doesn't give you headache. But I would check out the symptoms [^] just in case. Because that needs to be treated IMMEDIATELY.

Ooo err missus! Thanks, I checked out the symptoms and it doesn't seem appropriate. I've had these types of headaches since I were a nipper. Plus I were wear glasses and contacts, so have my eyes checked regularly, so you hope they would spot anything serious, although I'm not aware if they check for retinal detachment. Thanks anyways! :)

I suffer of migraines. Went to a doctor, MRI, nothing strange on my head. Some of the triggers of migraine is food, so to find out what triggered mine I had to take note of everything I ate. So far, this is the list of some triggers I found: Vinager, Wine, Pickles, Chocolate, Yellow Cheese. Every time I eat one of those, I have a free 3 days migraine. To release pain once I have it, is to cover my eyes and ears. No light and no sound. Boil some water and breath the hot vapour. Hope you can find your triggers fast... Good luck.

Hey thanks. I've tried to keep track of what I eat/drink. I have found excess coffee can trigger it, so now I have no more than 1-2 cups of tea a day. And even then I don't have tea everyday. Not sure what the food triggers could be.

I've never IDed a trigger; but I consistently have tense neck muscles as an aura[^]. Figuring out that's really helped me in dealing with them since the lag between the aura starting and pain starting is long enough for ibuprofen to kick in. I'm probably taking 2 or 3x as much as I used to since sometimes a stiff neck is just that but I've cut the frequency of migraines that make me miserable from one every few weeks to one every few months; and ones that actually make me leave work to hide in the dark from one every month or two to once or twice a year.

I'm not a doctor but it sounds like you should see one. That doesn't sound normal at all.

Actually a visual aura like what he describes is the most common warning sign of a migraine.

TIA X|

I had 2-3 of them a month for a while when I was in college. I had a few prescriptions which helped somewhat when I had the headache, but gave up on them and just took an over the counter pain killer and meditated in a cold dark room until I fell asleep. First, men tend to get them in their twenties and then the frequency drops off as they get older. That's what happened with me. As far as avoiding them, some of the big triggers are caffeine withdrawal, barometric pressure changes, aged cheese like cheddar, apples and all sorts of random foods, and lights like you mention. The best advice I ever got was from a doctor that had them himself. Keep a relatively level supply of caffeine through the day and don't sleep for more then eight hours. That helped get it under control and then figuring out my triggers got it down to 1-2 times a year and now it's been years since my last one.
