In this country (UK) anyway, you can get a phone for <£15 (~$20) on a Prepaid tariff, and most phones are free if you take one out on contract If all you want is to make phone calls, and maybe send texts, that's more than adequate. (Are you talking about call plans too, or just the cost of buying the phone?)

Most mobile phones are pretty much worthless but many cost several hundred. I currently have the Nokia E71x and it is a piece of *. I previously owned the Motorola Q and it was a piece of * (in fact they even replaced it once for free because it was so *ty.) Before that I owned a Razr and it was a piece of *. In fact so I don't list all of the phones I have had that sucked I will list the one I had that I liked. My Nokia 1260.
