Last week Microsoft put out the SDK for Windows Phone 7. Found Here.[^] I've been playing around with the SDK and emulator a bit. I like them but the big question as always is how will the app run on a real live device? The closest actual release date I could find for a device was in September. That's a bit far off. Does anybody know how I could get my grubby little hands on one for development purposes? I haven't been able to track down any info on this and thought I'd check with the forum before wandering off to beg from random manufacturers.

Even the 'Softies I know have been told to wait, so unless you can promise something more demoable than the phone-driven T-shirt cannon, I think you might be out of luck and stuck with the emulator for a while.

Rumor has it that the first phone might be out as early as september or october, but the official word is simply that it will come out in "holiday 2010". Personally I've been rather turned off to Windows Phone 7 after finding out that there will be no multitasking or copy and paste, and that the storage will be locked down and non-expandable. Coming from a Blackberry and Windows Mobile background*, I don't know that I could get used to it. *Posting this from Opera Mobile on a Touch Pro 2, actually.

Wow. They really were inspired by the iPhone. :-\

Marketing or management probably said "iPhone is locked down and is getting lots of sales - that must be the secret to their success!" The ironic thing is that iPhone has C&P now and is getting multitasking in the next version, so now MS is behind even them.

Well yeah, but if they gave it all to you out of the box you wouldn't have a reason to buy Windows Phone 8  My best guess is that they are trying to draw a line in the sand and force a hardware standard for the new OS. The old windows mobile would run tons of devices for you. But if you had a program written for a Touch pro, the chances of it working correctly on the Omnia are slim. You could usually get the cross over but it required a bunch of tinkering. Eh, who knows.

I don't mind the hardware standards... just the lack of certain key software features :)
