Not only does it download instead of showing in FF, but I get a GIF with a JPG extension that says "No hotlinking".

I assume that's because you visited the page it came from recently and aren't triggering the hotlink trap when reloading just the image. Try again in a different browser. I don't think I've seen any that track visits across browsers.

IE8 -- I got the "No hotlinking" message then copied the URL into a new tab and it worked, but wasn't worth it.

Didn't visit the page even originally, did a google image search to find it, copied URL and opened in a new browser. After all the drama here I have tested it on 9 clients, ranging from XP SP2 to Weven, in three countries. All clients have a minimum of four web browsers (IE/FF/Opera/Chrome). It worked fine on ALL of them. Also, several other users reported it working fine. I suppose I deserved all the 1's since all the machines I tested from are located on the same continent. Lazy me. I have an opinion of the univoters that voting 1 would be a too generous action to describe. //L [edit] You have got to be kidding me. Immature tossers. And yes, I consider that KSS. Firstly I find it unlikely that you know my mom, and as such you would be unable to state with any kind of certainty that I've cried to her about this or anything else. Secondly I do not downvote people as a joke, I do that if their post is moronic and/or offensive. I would have thought that to be the rational approach, and as such I do not see how my OP qualifies. But I am sure you can tell me. Thirdly I haven't cried to my mom, your mom, or the postman for that matter. I have stated I think this is ridiculous behaviour. Fourthly, if you wish to continue this exchange I welcome you to the Back Room. I cannot use the adjectives and nouns I'd like in here. //L

True. And they provide a handy little link that takes you to the image itself as well. A link that I've earlier explained has worked for me on a number of systems and browsers I tested it on after the drama here started. Other CPians in this thread has stated it worked for them too. Now I don't know why it didn't work for the others, and frankly - right now I couldn't care less. I cannot see what in my post warranted the flood of 1-votes, and I am exactly stupid enough to take offense. I tend to treat others the way I'd like to be treated, even on forums and other "anonymous" communication channels. And I am silly enough to expect the same from others. My mistake, and one that I am likely (hopefully) to repeat over and over. //L

Based on what Piebald consult[^] reported below about the reload image trick working (I'd forgotten about this) it appears that it's using an simple IP based hotlink detection system and only serving the penalty image for IPs that haven't made any other requests within [timeout]. If that's the case as long as all your test systems have the same public IP and don't hit the timeout you will never see the anti-hotlinking image. Except that while the reload trick might've worked for him it's not working for me which makes me suspect the anti-hotlink checker is just buggy and not triggering for some people. None of which changes the fact that the link you gave isn't work out of the box for a large fraction of people here. If instead of getting belligerent you would have changed your link to point to the page the image came from (which was a single remove-frame click away from google image search) you wouldn't've gotten as much flaming.

wahahahaha, good one, I think I will need to start telling the vendors to include the legend for "not a bug, it's a feature" in their ultra buggy software, you got a 5 for the good laugh

That would be a nifty trick - as I reported earlier I've tested with 9 clients in 3 countries.

Well, if that's all it takes, I've posted my last link in here. Wouldn't want to offend people. And I did in fact "change" the link after the second person said it didn't work. Other than that - I've spoken my piece about what I think of this, and consider myself done and disappointed. //L
