Avast version 5 "downgrade"

I suppose if you're running on Win 2000 or NT is time you upgraded. If you're running on MAC or Unix - tough cookie.
Two heads are better than one.

I've given up on avast and their noisy 2am announcements of "VIRUS DATABASE UPDATED!!" when I forget to turn the speakers down. Win7 and Microsoft Security Essentials. It does the job, simply and quietly, and is free.

If memory serves, it only works on Vista and up... Not XP. And of course it requires a "Genuine" version... So the pirates are out of luck.

I disabled the audio alert. Looks like Avast have gone from being the good guys to most CPians' anathema. Kinda like AVG who went out of favour and Avast became popular.

There's an option to disable audio notices. I don't recall if I found it myself or had to google for where they hid it.

Not sure what hacking Windows 7 has to do with Microsoft Security Essentials. We're talking about two different attack vectors. On to the larger topic of which AV is best: We've used most of them, and we use the best. We have still been attacked and had machines infected. No anti-virus is 100% (or even close) effective so I'm pragmattic and will use the most convenient, most affordable protection that, based on industry reports, does a sufficient job, and then cover my bum simply by having backups and assuming my system will get hosed one way or another.
