Rather than trying an alternate search program, I've been trying to figure out what the hell is going on with the built-in search. I created a file called "TheBananaFile.txt" and shoved some crap in there. If I put it in C:\Users\DTP\Documents\Misc\Old Chat Logs it gets found when I type in "TheBanana" in the search box. In C:\Users\DTP\Documents\Misc\Lyrics (or any other folder I've tried), it doesn't. There seems to be something special about the "Old Chat Logs" folder, but I've no idea what. The "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed" flag is set for all the folders inside Misc, the permissions are identical, the owner is identical (reset them several times to make sure). I can't see any difference between "Old Chat Logs" and the other folders I have in there, but for some reason the search only works with the files in that folder.

Yeah, I appreciate there are lots of other file search tools out there, but it'd be nice if the one built in to Windows worked. Seeing as it has its search box visible and easily accessible everywhere, plus theres all the indexing bloat etc running in the background. Not actually taking advantage of it seems somewhat wasteful.

The workaround I've found is to turn off indexing for all drives and to have the "No, do not enable Indexing Service" option selected in the preference for Windows Search. Search takes longer, but your system doesn't waste time on indexing and it doesn't skip over unrecognized file formats (e.g., ".cs" files). That's in XP though... not sure if it's the same in Windows 7.

Yeah, when I am seriouis about finding something on my machine, I turn to AR.. Been using it for years. Still do not get the proper results from MS Search. I do not understand why it is soooooo hard for them to make search work...

Especially when they've got that disk whirring indexing thing going for them! :) /ravi

"Filter components may ignore some text because of the format or content of the text." Jeeze, talk about defeating the object! Why use "filter components" at all? If you're searching for text, it should just open the files and look for text. There are good engineers, bad engineers, and over-engineers.

I think filter components would allow for non-plaintext data to be searched. But I agree - either make them work properly or remove them from the feature. A search that doesn't always search, isn't um... too useful. :) /ravi
