I'll answer both you and Domenic in one go 'cause I'm off to bed now: At School. I didn't go to a religious school so they taught things such as sexuality without attaching morality to them. The one in ten figure came from, strangely enough, an Austrailian video we were forced to watch during a biology lesson and the ensuing week or so of followup work, but I have heard it mentioned by all sorts of people, including my physics lecturer at college and most likely online in places too. The fifty percent bi figures also came from the Aussie video, though you have to read them in context which is at "any" time during their lives, so that includes experimentation, threesomes, etc. Now unless the Aussies are a more liberated bunch of folk... no, that just doesn't bear thinking about! The insecurities bit is based on the strong signals people give out when questioned after they jump on the "tee hee he said gay, he's a pervert" bandwaggon. A lot of people I've met (two things: firstly yes these things do really pop up from time to time, and secondly there are very few religious people locally which I believe is relavent to the accuracy of this information) fall into that category almost on instinct but cannot back it up when probed (deliberate pun, get it? ;)). The latter is nothing special and it is likely you (the reader) will fall into it, the former though is certainly not exagerated. Just take gay clubbing night (locally that is Tuesday) - the clubs are packed more than every other day of the week by a fair number. Ooh, I can feel the witty responses before I even hit submit... Later guys!

I once made these little magic folding wallets (the ones where you put the note in one side, then open the other side and it has flipped over) out of cereal box card and was selling them for ten pence during break and lunch times when I was about nine years old. I was good at it to, making about a pound before one of my punter's parents complained to the head and I was made to repay all my ten pences and given a stern telling off about abusing other kids for money like that. I was really devasted at the time - I used to spend hours making those damned little wallets as best as I could - they were worth ten times what I charged for them. :(( Anyway, I'll try to keep the rest somewhat on topic... :) Christian Graus wrote: Some activists here claim that 50% of people are gay and most supress it. I could say that about basically anything that presents itself as some form of mental struggle during ones life, no matter how trivial. Homosexuality insofar as what I see the one-hand extreme (active) and the other extreme (total surpression) is just a part of the dreaded male bonding. It is very easy to swing from one end of the scale to the other in any given situation, what actually defines you is how you handle that. Actually taking it on board is something that requires you to submit to it on a conscious level, whatever you decide is best for you, and that submission is what can drive people to suicide - whether it is in regards to sexuality, family, income, exams, or whatever. Left to it's own devices our ability for free thought is the single most dangerous attribute we have. With regards to your teen reference, that is worth talking further on. During your late teens (and I can only speak for the male side of the equation here, though I see no reason to doubt it is mirrored equally for the other sex) we go through a fairly extensive role model phase and one of the side effects of that is that we become very aware of interpersonal issues between people on a level never before experienced since we hit puberty. During this time it is by far "The Norm™" to go through a couple of uneasy periods of self discovery where you may honestly believe you hold h

The one-in-ten figure that is often quoted came from Alfred Kinsey's study of U.S. sexual behaviour, conducted in the 1940s and 50s. See http://www.indiana.edu/~kinsey/research/ak-data.html#homosexuality[^]. Kinsey's methodology has come under attack in recent years and many believe that the actual fraction of the population that is exclusively homosexual is far smaller. See, for instance, http://www.fumento.com/gaystat.html[^]. Why couldn't Science, in the long run, serve As well as one's uncleared lunch-table or Mme X en Culottes de Matador?     James Merrill
