I need to rescue a vista laptop (it's a friend's, not mine, so I don't know what has happened with it, but it has at least one bad sector) that suddenly started giving this weird error "Interactive logon process initialization has failed" It seems that a manifest file from WinSxS is corrupted. This is from the event log: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Windows\system32\LogonUI.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6000.16386_en-us_73127183348802ed.manifest" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax. I think I can fix the problem by just copying this file from a working vista machine, but I don't have one at home (only xp and win 7). Can someone running vista email me this file pls? Just append gmail.com to my username.

He could insert the Vista install CD and reinstall without formating. Everything will be the same except for the errors.

But if all i need to do is replace one file as it seems i'd rather do that than reinstall.

...and then the next one will start to bite you. And then the next... If you are getting this because of disk errors (as indicated by the bad sectors), then it is quite likely that other files have been affected. I would back up now, and do a clean re-install, but be aware that if you are starting to get bad sectors, then the problem will only get worse. In all the times I have seen an HDD start to give new bad sectors, they have never been long for this world!

Much as I dislike Vista, I hardly think upgrading to Windows 7 will get rid of bad sectors. :)

1 - Boot into safe mode. 2 - Run "chkdsk /r" 3 - Reboot into safe mode. 4 - Run "sfc /scannow" Steps 2 and 4 may take some time. Step 4 will make sure all critical files are restored and correct.

Sure it will. You just have to say yes to the Format Disk choice.

Are you still looking for a copy of the file? I have a vista home premium machine at home, I could pull it from after work (~10hrs from now).
