Why SATA II Sucks Today
-
So, as a 30th birthday present (Not yet here, but you have to make sure all the parts are good right? ;)), I was permitted to purchase the components for my very first above standard computer. I've never been able to afford a computer that is considered reasonable by current standards, and although what I've bought isn't bleeding edge, from what I've read, it's pretty good. So, AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE @ 3.4ghz 8gb G-Skill Ripjaws DDR3 memory Sapphire Radeon 5850 1gb (DX11 card) Asus M4A89GTD mobo Asus blu-ray drive Antec 900 Antec P850 (mistakenly, as it's a HUGE PSU that won't possibly fit in any case I own, but I'll remedy that) 1TB Western Digital Black SATA II HDD Windows 7 So, I get all the hardware together and everything boots up first time, no beeps or anything. I'm so proud of myself, that never happened before. I didn't even draw blood on this build which is a first. Windows 7 is an absolute doddle to install, an hour after getting everything setup I'm ready to run the performance index to see what I've got myself. (For those that don't know, the scores go from 1 to 7.9) Processor.................7.4 (ooo, never seen a machine above 6 before) Memory....................7.5 (wow!) Graphics..................7.7 (awesome! this was a great investment) Gaming Graphics...........7.7 (again, all is good) Primary Hard Disk.........5.9 (awww.. man that sucks!) So, my overall score is the lowest score and I get a 5.9. I SHOULD have spent $20 more on the SATA-III version of the drive. But, you know what, this is the best machine I've ever owned. This is a step up from a Pentium D 3ghz with 3gb of memory and Windows XP. I'm happy. And I'll invest in SATA-III and SSD as soon as I can afford it. Just thought I would share.

Way better than any of my computers.

YEah, SATA-III would have been better, but I doubt it would have given you anywhere near a 7.x score. It would have still been in the 6.x range and lower. I better bet to increase the score would be a faster HDD (as well as SATA III). Something like a WD Raptor Drive (10,000 or 15,000 rpm) with a large cache. Unfortunately, the come in much lower capacities than 1TB. More like 80gb and 150gb. However, you can't beat the performance. [edit] I stand corrected. WD Raptors how come in 450GB and 600GB sizes. I have two Velociraptor drives in RAID0, and I get 6.2, so the number does not really change much. However, you can feel the difference from a single, slower hard disk.

Thanks for the info. However, I feel I'll just have to get by ;) To be honest, I wanted a machine that could play some games, but I do a lot more development than I do gaming. As a development rig, this more than meets any spec I'll need.

You'll need an SSD to match the rest of your specs: my Intel SSD gives a score of 7.4. But you will also need your conventional disk as SSD's aren't big enough to hold all your data, so it won't be wasted. Nick

Agree, it' probably the drive much more than the SATA II.

If you want a respectable hard drive score, you're gonna have to get a SSD. My boss got a new system yesterday, and it has a 128gb SSD boot drive, and his hd score was only 6.8. I think someone else here got a SSD, and their hd score was in the 7's. To make your "black" purchase even less impressive, I have a non-black Sata2 drive, and it gets a 5.9 hd score - just like your black drive. SATA3 will undoubtedly push you into the 6's, but I wouldn't expect much more than 6.1 or 6.2...
