Funeral and Meaning of Life

I was a pall bearer for a 82 year person, Here in Canada. During the process something happened, It made me realize that chasing all mighty dollar is foolish. There are more important things in life. What do you think!!!!!!!!!!

Money is only good to get you things. As far those things are good for you (family time, security, etc) money is a good thing. Just money for money's sake does you no good. I remember that every time I am traveling, then forget it when I am home, and spend time on the computer instead of with my family.

Money can't buy you love, but it can buy lots of other neat stuff (e.g., Tactical Nuclear Penguin)! As far as the meaning of life, it is up to you to discover yours.

Remember that the 'mighty dollar' and other currencies are in fact just figments of our collective imagination that we use to avoid having to barter for everything. Chasing after money is therefore very, very stupid. The old biblical adage was not "money is the root of all evil", but rather "the love of money is the root of all evil". So it's not how much you've got, but how much you want it and what you'll do to get it and hang on to it that is the real danger. As regards the meaning of life, if you want the (even older) biblical version it is at Ecclesiates 12:13 - It does depend on the translation whether it reads clearly or not, and even if you have a good translation (or can read the original Hebrew) it will probably raise more questions than answers. So as a previous poster said - maybe it's just best to go out and find it for yourself. Can tell you one thing though, family is important, precious even, but whoever says that the meaning of life is 'family' is an idiot. There are plenty of cultures (mafia, triads) who are fundamentally based around amoral familyism (sic) - where family is put before everything else - it's a clear case against thinking that 'family' is the most important thing.
I just love Koalas - they go great with Bacon.

Sure there are more important thinks that all mighty dollar like the all mighty Euro!! Seriously wich is really hard for me OK so seriouslly it's obvious that there is more than money to life. Consider this scenario: you have a buisness that goes well => money, money, money. But it also => time, time, time. I would go for a middle way with less money but less time required.

Money gives you freedom of choice. It's all very well for people to say it isn't everything but try eating or paying the rent/mortgage or raising a family without a source of income. (Unless you're in the UK in which case not a problem: the govt will pay you to do nothing). It's not that there are more important things in life, there are other things and life is about balancing them all.

FTFY If you think chasing the money is foolish then send what you have to me. Everything in moderation is another platitude of bullshit, if it is worth doing it is worth over doing is more my style. Your 82yo - not a bad innings, I hope they died happy.

Not sure what you mean... it might be related to money, happiness and their relationship I guess... On this, according to the latest happiness news, in America 66 k$py is all you need money wise to have an impact on happiness (less will make you unhappy, more won't help)

Nature disagrees; money adds to your survival-options, hence the aphrodisiacal effect. Our statements are not only conflicting, they're also both extremes, with life somewhere in the middle :)

Yup, like chasing a euro, or a yen. The most important thing in your life would be survival, that's what you're programmed to. Food, clothes, shelter- all costs money. Would you depart from some of that money, to better the lives of others? Yeah, most of us do, charity is a quite common practice. Then ask yourself if you would turn down a profit of 10 million, if you dumped some toxic waste in a country that you never even heard of.

Not only in the UK, in germany as well. A neighbour of a work-mate is jobless, but he is not searching for a job because he would be earning more working than exploiding the government, but he would lose all the exceptions he has, so he would be paying more to live than this difference in the incomes. So doing maths, it is better to do nothing than to have a job.  I don't really understand politics

Money is not bad, as long as it doesn't become "the first" in your life. About life... One is not happier having a lot, happier is the one not needing so much. So, yes, money is needed in the world we are living, but if you can get enough to live without problems, having some saves for not expected problems (i.e, car broken) and letting you some "luxus" (i.e, nice holidays) from time to time... I think is more than enough. But... if you live your life obssesed on money, working/cheting/doing whatever it costs to have more... most probably the only thing you will get is a list of "very thankfull" descendants that will heritate all the money you could not enjoy by yourself. What is the sense of having a very big house or a palace, if you can not have the feeling of having a home? The bigger the house is, the more difficult to full it with friends, loughs of kids and/or many other things that make it really worth. The bigger and faster your car is, the less you can enjoy the sights during the travel. ... One sentence I like a lot is: "I would like to whish you that you always get whatever you want, but sometimes is good to fail and learn a lesson from it... What I do whish you is you always havethe strength to try to get what you want, but that you always get what you really need."

Well, you'll get over it. Funerals have a tendency to give people that whistful longing in the eye look. But if not, one has to find the balance in our responsibility toward money and each other financially, and also our own goals for personal/spiritual development and caring. So, chasing the almightly dollar is not a bad thing necessarily when you have a family, kids, a college fund, etc. Marc
