It's true: security is as good as the lowest common denominator.

My wife, Michelle - who among her other talents could forget her passwords for Britain at Olympic level - forgot her password to the "genes reunited" website. No problem, enter your email address, and they send you a password reminder. The reminder is a bit accurate: the message they send is:
Your password is "Elephant"
Now, that's what I call a security system!
You should never use standby on an elephant. It always crashes when you lift the ears. - Mark Wallace C/C++ (I dont see a huge difference between them, and the 'benefits' of C++ are questionable, who needs inheritance when you have copy and paste) - fat_boy

That's so inefficient... Honestly, they should just put an "I forgot my password" button on the login screen, which would immediately say "Your password is 'Elephant'", without all of that tedious mucking about with E-mails :)
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Clippy: "You appear to have forgotten your password. Your password is "Elephant". Shall I enter that for you?"

Well... having to create a new password is a much worse user experience, and promotes forgetting that one again. Keeping the original password, however, is much more insecure. Between a rock and a hard place. Or, to quote the first directive of security: passwords don't work.

I'm amazed MS didn't think of that one!

My mortgage company has a complex online system for setting up your account so no calls are required. Not 100% secure but fair enough since all you can do is make payments and view the balance ... however, as part of my mortgage they sent the account up for me and didn't send me the password. So now I still have to call to use the system.

From what I read, they did. Microsoft Bob allowed a user to 'password protect' documents, but typing the wrong password too many times would allow the user to reset the password and (IIRC) ask the user to please remember the new one.
