Hols are over and I'm back in my office after 3 weeks. On the plus side I still had building access and my inbox was very light. I also lost count of the number of pubs visited, always a plus. I had, however, quite forgotten how expensive petrol is. Dear God. I was certain my American credit card would reject the charges as blatantly fraudulent. Good luck all on surviving the election, three weeks of it did my head in.

How's old Great Britain doing? Were you visiting family or did you travel around?

Did you get caught in the same trap of retarded shop attendants insisting that they can't take your credit card because it isn't chip and pin? That one really pissed me off when I was back last year. So much for using your Visa / Mastercard anywhere in world.

Much the same as I left it, then again I tend to get back at least once a year. This last break was, however, just over two years which felt like a long time until I landed then it felt like I'd never been away. It really did hurt when I filled up the hire car though, 50 quid for a full tank - ouch. Then a local-ish pub was having a real ale week so pints were only 2.50 which balanced it out ;)

Only one, and I pointed to the other slot on the machine which she promptly used. Since chip and pin has failed to do much of anything other than make chip and pin companies wealthy I doubt very much they'll spread.

I've been away for 2 1/2 years now, I want to get back soon but money is not allowing it right now. 50 quid for a tank though, Dick Turpin wore a mask! When I left Maidenhead, a pint of proper beer was costing somewhere in the region of 3 quid. I don't know whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, but since moving to my new home, drinking is a rare event.

In my previous company back in Europe I spend two years in development of an application for POS terminals supporting the chip cards. The company even sent me to some expensive training, so I know almost everything about this technology and regarding my experience you are hundred percent right! The technology is overcomplicated and the “offline pin verification” is nearly useless. In some Europeans countries /particularly UK, Poland and Bulgaria/ people used to block their cards/three unsuccessful entering PIN attempts/, thus you are able to use your card in a “normal” way – with the magnetic strip and signature.
