I'm not big on mass e-mails, but this project sounds cool, and I figured our CPian's international flavor would be of particular interest. _______________________________________

Subject: Deming Elementary 5th grade project

Hello! We are in the 5th grade at Deming Elementary School in Terre

Haute, Indiana. We are located in Vigo County, on the western border

of Indiana. Our teacher, Mrs. Julie Sitarski, is helping us by using

her e-mail address as our e-mail receiver. We have decided, after

seeing this done at another school, to map an e-mail project. We are

curious to see ?where in the world? our e-mail will travel via the

    Internet between October 7, 2002 and November 7, 2002 (only 1 month).

This is not a pen pal project, so we will not write you back unless

you request it. We would appreciate your help. If you receive this

    message, we ask that you:

    1. E-mail us back at: mailto:jjs@vigoschools.org

and tell us your city/state/location so we can plot it on our map.

    1. Send this letter on to everyone you know so that they can send it

on to everyone they know and so on to help us reach even more people.

We don't mind receiving repeats so send it on to everyone. We will

keep a graph in math class using the numbers received by state and

    country.

We will post our results on our web page so that you can see how we did.
With your help, we can make this a very exciting learning experience.

    Thank you for your help.

What a wonderful way of harvesting e-mail addresses! It's nice to see there are still some enterprising young folk left in your schooling system. :-D

Despite some people claiming it is harvesting e-mail addresses, it appears it could be legit. The hostname for Deming Elementary schools (http://galileo.vigoco.k12.in.us/%7Edemgel/[^]) is restricted to sites authorized by the state of Indiana. And to my knowledge no state has the authority to let non-government funded institutions use a [state].us domain. There isn't much telling what Mrs. Sitarski will do with all the e-mail addy's though :P

Odd, I can't reply to Nitron's post so I'll just reply to my own. Re: Snopes page It is similar for a reason; the status says "Not any longer" so I assume it wasn't a fake story it really did happen but they aren't collecting replies anymore. Checking the pages listed for Deming Elementary show that they are collecting the e-mails ;)

I live about 60 miles west of Terre Haute on I-70. This sounds cool.

Not! Think of all the things we learned to do for ourselves - entertainment and education didn't always end when the batteries ran out. We learned self-reliance; they're learning dependency. Their survival depends upon a fully functional technological society - a tenuous thing at best. Ours has no need of such a fragile, artificial structure - our knowledge and wits will suffice. While I envy them the toys they get to play with, I feel much more secure in the knowledge and skill we have. A pity that so few of the younger ones have any interest in learning the skills that made their world possible for a while...
