Well since we already had Geek of the day or something I suppose this is the same. No it's not a flesh and blood baby but my new dev pc got approved :D i7 930 GIGABYTE EX58-UD4P LGA 1366 12Gb Ram ( 3 x 4Gb with 3 free for expansion later ) 2 x 146Gb 15.2krpm SAS drives mirrored 1 x 500Gb Sata 7200rpm for crap storage Raid Card with support for 2 more SAS devices. An existing Gcard for the monitors and my existing dual 23"'s. Now, bring on the VS2010 multi-instances :D

Unless you really need that much high speed disk space and had a fixed budget you'd've been better off spending the funds on 80/128/160GB SSDs for $220/320/450 each. They can match peak transfer rates and stomp sas drives silly on random IO (this is the sort that normally makes your computer seem slow).

SO jealous!!! I have to dev on an old HP slim unit which has a Pentium D processor in it... It isn't even a Core2Duo.

SSD's here are dreadfully expensive although I did look, nearly double the price and thats for 80GBs. These drives were actually pretty cheap and I'm pretty sure I'll utilise most of that space. The 500Gb is for junk that needs to sit, I intend the main raid to be pure dev madness only. Unfortuantely I also have to install Office, project etc and other dev environments too ( Eclipse for Blackberry development ). My old machine ( Core 2 Duo 8500 on a CubeCove 8Gb Ram ) is going to be handed down to my new dev. So it's just a rotation of hardware dependant on developer power need.

When I googled for prices here the 15k sas drives you had only cost $300 each which was right in the middle of the price band for SSDs. That there's such a large SSD premium where you are sucks; swapping my OS/APP drive for an SSD outperformed 5 of my 6 major component upgrade/complete system replacements in terms of noticable change. The only exception was going from single to dual core.
