Why are people not crazy about viruses?

    • Viruses mess up your computer.
    • Viruses make everything run excruciatingly slowly.
    • Viruses result in lost productivity.

My experience with McAfee has been that their anti-virus product does every single one of these things. So I sneak around behind corporate IT's back figuring out ways to disable the anti-virus on my office laptop (if you're interested in the details - I wrote a Windows service configured to launch under SYSTEM account and have it launch a process that you pass to it as a startup parameter. I then start this service passing "services.msc" as the process to be launched and then go ahead and stop all the McAfee services from this new console window). At any rate, here's further evidence that McAfee products are about as anti viruses as, say, nuclear weapons are anti-death!

Norton too, getting that off your system is like pulling teeth.

          Agent Smith (The Matrix) said:

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus.

Without mentioning the specific agency, the government agency that I work for uses McAfee for their anti-virus and we were all forced to shut our systems down for the majority of today while they figured out what to do with this issue. Being that my job is primarily on the computer, I got to sit around all day waiting.

I have not used virus scanners for years. They offer a false sense of protection and slow things down while they do it. Backups + updates + ability to quickly restore a system are more useful than a virus scanner, IMO. Whenever I fix somebody's computer, this is what I tell them.

Same problem here. It only affected Windows XP with McAfee DAT 5958. McAfee has posted 5959 DAT that prevents the 'false positive that acts like w32/wecorl virus' issue. You still have to replace the svchost.exe file on the affected computers though. Since I had W7 on my computer I was the MAN today. Vista and W7 images are being pushed out as we speak  Everything would be W7 but W7 took away the possibility of creating a default profile easily. That is another issue to rant about on another day. Back to pushing out the new images...
