Recommendation for a sports wristwatch

I have a Casio g-shock watch that means all your must-have's, and since it sets itself via atomic clock signals it never drifts more than a second or so per day. It's UI is no worse than average for a kitchen sink watch; I'd make sure they have an updated version for the new daylight savings rules though. Toggling that manually is a pain.

Even the cheap $10 digital watches I've had in the past only drifted by about 1 second/day, so I don't think you'll have to worry about this much unless you go analog (no idea about error rates for these).

I've looked into G-Shock and it doesn't cut it. Sure, it's a tough solar powered watch with atomic sync, but it lacks compass or heart rate monitor and it costs too much for what it offers. Ehhh, basically I've got no reason to get it. However, while looking for G-Shock I came across Casio's "ABC" line of watches, PAW-2000 Pathfinder in particular, it has great reviews and seems to fit my needs. So I guess thanks for pointing out Casio. I'd still welcome more recommendations though. Anyone heard or Silva wristwatches? In particular Silva Traileader Jet model? How are they, where they are made?

I know people who use Suunto watches as skydiving / BASE altimeters and they swear by them. I just use a normal wristwatch for everyday use and have a Garmin forerunner for exercise / trekking etc which has gps with programmable waypoints and heart rate monitoring. The garmin is water resistant but not designed for swimming.

You just can't beat a Timex, $15 bucks at Walmart.

I second that motion. I've had a G-Shock for years (a nice metalic one). I love those watches and I'd start wearing one if I could find a reason. But my cell has everything I need right now. Maybe battery power, but then again, my cell lasts long enough. It's specially build so that in case you stump the watch it's kind of protected. Excellent for outdoors stuff. I don't know if they have heart rate monitor or some of the later stuff, but I know some models have a compass build in.

I'm not outdoorsy enough to have much of a chance of actually breaking it; but after 3(4???) years of use the watch face is still unscratched; something I can't say about any of the other watches I've owned.

A friend has a Garmin Forerunner 405 which has the aforementioned heart rate monitor. It doesn't have a compass though :( but it does have GPS :) . Very, very, very expensive though.

Yeah, I know of Garmin Forerunners, but that's a very specific watch for a very specific purpose. I'm not that big into running, and the battery life on Forerunners is abysmal, it can hardly even be called a wristwatch because it needs recharging every 10 hours.

I've had a couple Timex sports watches. My complaint with them is their bands. With two watches I've been through 5 or 6 bands. They're also really bad about maintaining bands for watches more than a year or two old. The last time the band broke on a watch that was 2 years old, they told me they no longer made bands for the watch :thumbsdown:. I bought a Casio as a replacement.

the 305 has a mode that displays an on screen compass and also an arrow back to your starting point. Really handy when you go for a run in a city you don't really know.

Vector HR[^] or X6HR[^]. X6HR is the only one sufficiently water resistant[^] for swimming.

delete this;I've never seen OEM replacement bands for sale anywhere. Which is annoying because I don't like leather/metal bands and while all three OEM Casio bands I've had lasted a few years (my current one is 3 or 4 years old and isn't showing any signs of stress cracks yet) the generic replacement bands I can find are only good for 6-12mo and the scraping from popping the pins in/out scrapes the holes wider. As that happens te pins become more likely to pop free by accident and eventually the plastic around it snaps and the watch is junked.
