chat software recommendations

Is anyone using chat software that they like and would actually recommend? Windows Messenger usually works but is kinda crappy. I've also been using Meebo.com but lately the bug/feature ratio they are rocking is way too high.

Author of the Guardians Saga (Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels)I second that. Pidgin is a great alternative to Windows Messenger, it's faster and doesn't have all that (to some) unnecesary eye-candy. Plus, it supports several chat networks/protocols, such as IRC, XMPP, AIM, ICQ etc. etc.

Seconded. Doesn't have webcam support though.
Yeah... But then, I find myself using my webcam less and less... Maybe I've outgrown the idea of actually seeing people when I talk to them.

Yep... I use it for AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and Google Talk..... Stopped connecting to ICQ, because nowadays, that's nothing but spam (Still have my old 6-digit UIN though)

Besides Pidgin, I recommend Google Talk. It's also very fast (compared to Windows Messenger) and maybe even faster than Pidgin. The only down-sides (from my point of view) are that it doesn't support multiple protocols like Pidgin does, and doesn't have webcam support. So you'll only be able to talk to people who actually have Google Talk, you won't be able to use to use your Messenger account - which I suppose you want to be able to. :)

I'm not currently using it, but on my last job I wrote one so that some of my colleagues and I could could exchange code and ideas. One of the projects I'm procrastinating on is changing it to use a Web Service.

Skype. Webcam and remote desktop sharing facility available. Little heavy on the memory at times though.

I used to be a big fan of Pidgin, until I found Digsby. IMO Digsby is a more stable, more functional version of Pidgin (in that it supports multiple chat clients). Give it a look, its def worth using.

I just installed Digsby...it installed some kind of xobni mail indexing thing into my Microsoft Outlook...there was no option to turn that off. Anyway in un-installs from control panel those who want to get rid of it.

I've actually never had problems with Yahoo Messenger. It worked the first time I used it, and it still works, but does more, so I've never bothered looking elsewhere.

I'm using Palringo, originally I used their windows mobile client as it connects to all the major chat services, more recently I've been using the desktop client too having ditched msn, it does everything I need it to and has a clean, unobtrusive interface, well worth checking out. http://www.palringo.com/[^]
