Off Topic, European eyes only: I think American burgers are crap. The stuff is overcooked and tasteless. At home, when I HAVE to eat a burger, I always go for Quick hamburgers (they exist in France and Belgium, to my knowledge). The meat is slightly rosy, with just some blood oozing. Every time I took an American out to a Quick, they ended up throwing up their lunch :-)

As an American: Our fast food is crap. It is done to cater to the lowest common denominator. When I go to a real restaurant I get a medium rare burger. If they screw it up, I know not to bother with the place ever again. It should be pink in the middle, savory, and dribble a bit when bitten into. All the good stuff gets cooked out otherwise and you are eating a piece of shoe leather. As for the topic: Under $5US for a burger meal here unless it is a specialty burger.

This is because so many businesses are worried about people getting food born illnesses from their burgers so they overcook them. Even places which don't mass produce usually won't cook anything under medium if you are lucky and more than likely it will be medium well. Then they do the worst thing to a burger besides over cooking them... they smash the thing so all the juices ooze out all over the grill. :(( Personally medium rare is as cooked as I want them. The very core should still be a little cool for my tastes. This along with never seasoning with more than maybe a little fresh black pepper and salt but the meat should be the star. If I am feeling fancy then it will get a bit of good cheese made at a dairy down the road from me. If I am feeling healthy then it gets lettuce and a few tomato slices. The bun should be slightly toasted and either mayo or a good brown mustard, never anything that is bright yellow.

mmmmmmmmm sounds good. I'm one of those who likes their steaks blue or tartare and their burgers pretty close to it. It's not something I'd suggest to people who aren't prepared for it though. Man, now that I think about it, BBQ season is coming up.

It would likely be illegal (or at least tempting a civil suit) to serve ground beef that was still pink in the U. S. Too many cases of salmonella "poisoning" have made rare and medium rare hamburger extinct in the U.S.

MacDonalds != American burgers Seriously, I don't think they even use real meat...

They do! (or they used to - I worked there for a year in college) Grade D was what I remember all the frozen hamburger patty packages as being labeled.

$5.65 US with tax in Arizona. Plus, I burned a gallon of gas, so add another $3 or so.

Depends on where the meat comes from. The "juice" might just be an antibiotics solution with side effects your health care provider doesn't cover.

I believe around $4.80 in the US mountain west. Their burgers are rather bland, but I like their apple pies and their new Angus Burger isn't bad (though the Burger King to the east of my office is definitely better--the one to the west is terrible. It's rather strange.) I only eat at McDonald's if I have to deposit a check since my bank is right next door. For burgers & fries, my favorite place is 5 Guys Burgers and Fries[^]. The fries are simply excellent.
