Many, many years ago, I had to review a piece of (mainframe) software which had been translated from Dutch to French (by Dutch speaking programmers). Now of course this software also displayed error messages and prompts when some user input was not correct. Anyway, when filling out personnel records, you had to input the person's sex, and the program checked if the value was M or F (other values in the original languages). The program would prompt you if you input anything else. Now the Dutch version of the prompt was 'Het geslacht is verkeerd ingevoerd', which says as much as 'The input for gender is not correct', but had been translated by these oafs to 'Le sexe est mal introduit', which, to a native French speaker means 'The penis is not inserted correctly'.

I'm trying to remember if any Microsoft software ever told me that. Apple, maybe, but not Microsoft. :)

        Best wishes, Hans

It was inserted correctly. You just couldn't tell, because it was Microsoft.

So does that indicate a man or a woman? You can't take these things for granted.

Run these through google translate for a laugh... French->English gives you "Sex is evil introduced" Dutch->English gets "Sex is mistyped"

How boring, translating the Dutch to French and then the French to English gives me: "Sex is misspelled" I was hoping for something less reasonable. Damn online translation, it must be getting better.
