I was at a technology conference recently when a microsoft hater began talking about how microsoft wld soon crumble and how google would win in the ongoing Google vs Microsoft war. His beef with microsoft was "everything they produced was for sale". This got me thinking. Imagine a world where every software was free, and google the free search engine was free to advertisers, and Facebook the free social service was free to advertisers as well, and all the games were free....and the list goes on. Wld it really be fun to program when you knew the software wld be available for free? Bill Gates did a terrific job.

If software was free we'd all be picking carrots in a field.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, and a company needs to make a profit. Would you dabble in the muck for sheer fun? I guess that depends if you need the brass to pay the bills :)

So.. he blames MS for selling their software? He's not cynical enough. And you only like programming because you get paid? I suggest you become an accountant.

I read that before looking at who the poster was. It was a surprise to see that it was you because I had assumed it was from Alison!

Would the MS hater have been appeased if MS gave some stuff away for free? Or did he just hate MS and needed to rationalise?
