What Really Grinds My Gears..

So What Really Grinds my Gears Today? Agencies... I am browsing through the job sites and found a job that was advertised about 2 days ago. Place application for said job, Get call from said agency and then the standard conversation starts. "Well we feel that role is not suitable for you however we would like to keep you on our books" blah blah blah.. What Grinds my gears is, the role exactly matchs my skill set and they were obiviously looking for CV's to add to their database. The role did not exist and I wasted my time. I have a hatred of dealing with "Agency Trolls" that put fake job ad's up and harvest CV's as they come in, imo I would much rather do the job searching myself and pick the roles I am interested in, not the Roles they want to put me in because they want the highest bonus, its just a waste of my time. The other side is my hatred for "pushy" Agencies, ones that argue with you over the phone as to why the job is perfect for you.. when you are the only one that knows if its perfect for you, the ones that dont listen to you, think they are only right and have a tendency of having the phone put down on them... Yes you guessed it, Im in the UK job marketing looking for a job.. :-(
The exact same happened to me last time. In the end I didn't get anywhere and I was "encouraged" to stay here a bit longer. Won't last forever, and I'm totally dreading that whole process again.

It is illegal to advertise a job which doesn't exist. I guess you could call them out on it if you could be bothered. This ranks at the same level as an agent wanting to submit your cv to a company but won't tell you the name of the company. How is that supposed to work?

I don't know how common it is but it happened to me too. The recruiter was very secretive about the whole thing, and borderline rude if I dare try and find any information about the role. The recruiter himself wanted to meet with me to see if I was "good enough", to even put my CV forward. I told him not to bother.

Yep! Every job ive gone for, they have never stated the company name until a Interview is offered. Its only by extensive Research by myself that I actually find out (on some occasions). I guess they are only protecting themselves as if you did know there would be nothing stopping you approaching the company direct. but even then its frustrating, as you dont get the chance to find out about the company themselves (including the non corporate "glossy" picture - which I like to read sometimes!) personally, i feel this practice (along with the first two) should be outlawed. The thing that bothers me about agencies is that the blind email, and close said email with something like "If you're not available or inetreested in this position, but know someone that might be, please provide his/her contact info." I always respond with a question regarding my cut of their commission for finding someone, and I get no reply back. Maybe it's got something to do with the salutation I use in the reply - "Dear Lazy F*cker..." The next most annoying thing is having an agency call me on the phone from an out-sourced location *cough*india*cough*...

I found this to when i was job hunting last year. I had a couple of job agency's that i liked and everytime they called they asked for who else i had interviews with or they said dont tell anyone else as this roles is given out by me only at the moment

I went through this a few years ago after being made redundant. Every agency I dealt with bar one (whose name I cannot remember) gave me the usual run around. One agent even told me that she would set up an interview for the following week, but first I had to fill in their detail form (they already had my CV) before proceeding. When I asked why they needed my details a second time she claimed it was because "we are regulated". When pressed about the interview she told me the manager had gone on holiday, so I told her I was sick and tired of agents lying to me and heard nothing further. When I approached companies directly I received either a polite "thanks, but no thanks", or an interview, in every case. I think there is a lesson there.

Or the very obviously Indian Call Center employee who informs you his name is Martin or Derek or some suitably normal western name, and then tries to sell you some POS that you don't want or need.

best company that i found for job hunting was computerfutures they helped me loads. they gave me soo much insight into the job interview and company that it was scarey, until i got this one with their help and advise I got me into the final stages of every interview i attended.

Body shoppers, I really hate those guys, but there's a trick in getting rid of them: Play along on the first call, ask for more details and finally agree upon an interview a week later, two days later send a mail to the agency that you have thought it through and you don't feel this is a correct move and that you don't want to waste your time nor that of the interviewer. The agency will say they understand and that they will contact you if something else comes up, but they never do. works everytime.

There may not be a role but they want to get their hands on your CV for their database. Another trick is that they ask if you've applied for any other jobs so they don't send your CV along again. What they are really doing is looking to place candidates against you as they don't stand to make any commission for a role you find through another recruiter.

There are a couple of consultancy companies (Often associated with government database / traffic monitoring schemes) who deliberately advertise at prices way below the market rate. By doing this they are able to turn round and get their foreign outsourcing rubberstamped because they can't find those skills in the UK. It's a great ploy, we pay through taxes for a system for which we will also pay through fines / loss of privacy and in the process of building it we pay because our market values actually become devalued through these shenanigans.

Don't get me started mate. I've dipped my toe in the water too and have dealt with a lot of recruiters this past few weeks and they are all your best friend at the beginning... BTW, Monster and CW Jobs are the best sites I've found but if you can recommend any others then please let me know.
